Most gun-enlightened state?

Reading about the different CCW restrictions in the various states, and being frustrated by some of those in my area, I begin to wonder, which state is the best for gun owners? That is, the state with the fewest restrictions, and less media or citizen bias against gun owners. For instance, legality and _feasibility_ of (ie likelihood of harrassment-free) open carry, and being able to carry (concealed or open) in places like restaurants that serve alcoholic beverages, parks, public transportation, etc.

Are any really that much better than the others, or do they pretty much all have problems?

Vermont, obviously, springs to mind with no license required for CCW, but I've no idea what the general political climate or restrictions are.

A corollary question would be, what's the most gun-friendly metro city area? Obviously rural areas tend to be less restrictive than urban areas, so although a state may be generally friendly, it may not apply at all in its major cities.

The end goal, of course, would be to know what the best choices are if I want to move. And the further question would be, what if a large number of RKBA or liberty-minded people started moving to one particular city/state area?

Allow me to nominate Arizona and Phoenix, despite the fact that we keep getting anti-gun transplants from the next state over. Call it, "Kalifornication."

Phoenix is the the sixth largest city in the country. Walking downtown with a sidearm on your hip will not get you a second look from the local constabulary. Open carry without a permit. Concealed carry with a permit. In Arizona, open carry means partially visible. Just an inch or so of holster showing is open carry, (until a judge reinterprets the law).

Old state law "suggested" and a new state law supposedly "demands" that any public building requesting that no weapons are allowed inside must provide firearms lockers.

It is easy to get a CCW here, you can carry a loaded firearm in your vehicle as long as it is in plain sight and we have Pro Gun leglislators in office. Firearms are just a fact of life here. Almost everyone here as 5 they will tell you about and another 20 they won't tell about. (not because they are illegal, just valued by the owner).
We have an extreamly low murder rate here. How can that be? Lots of firearms and a low murder rate. Hey Janet Reno, kiss my a**!

I currently live in Texas but may have to relocate to Idaho. I heard Boise was exploding with growth. Do you know if the people coming to Boise are antigun freaks from Kali, N.York, etc.?

Vermont is an odd state, it's full of liberal hippy types (redundant?) but has the least restrictions on CCW.

Hmmm....

Vermont - cold

Idaho - cold

Texas - hot, humid

Arizona - hot

Florida - hot, humid

I guess you can have a concealed gun or mild weather, but not both. ;)

Colorado allows the carry of a firearm in the vehicle for lawful protection while traveling. It need not be visible.

The exception is Denver where they don't want armed victims and will seize your car if you carry a firearm. The law is in contravention to state law that allows you to carry in a vehicle. There is an effort to have state preemption.

CCW is a patchwork but the best city in the state for CCW is Colorado Springs. The sheriff there is pro gun to the max and has issued literelly thousands of CCW permits which are good throughout the state with the possible exception of Denver but I'm not sure of that.

some counties will issue non resident permits
see www.packing.org for more info.

Vermont

And they don't have any Jim Crow Mariage laws either.

Nevada is another good state for personal freedom too.

WA is pretty good. You can carry anywhere except bars (other parts of restaurant are ok), jails, non-public areas of police stations, courthouses, state parks.

Open carry is not prohibited, but you can't carry in a manner that might "cause alarm" to anyone, so for practical purposes, no open carry. Your permit allows you to carry open or concealed in your car.

Registration for handguns only, but the on-line records aren't kept current.

A few years ago, we soudly defeated Initiative 676, which required safety locks, safety classes, and a few other socialist schemes.

Complete state preemption, so no Seattle socialist busy-bodies can mess with gun owners.

Vermont! I live here, and keep telling you guys to come for a visit.

There are a bunch of the liberal crunchies, but they are concentrated in one area (Burlington) and easily kept under surveillance.

No permits needed, very low crime (except in Burlington - what a coincidence). :D

The only problem with Vermont is if you travel 5 miles in any direction your over the border and into far, far, less friendly territory. A friend of mine hails from Vermont but lives and works in NC. He is afraid that the anti’s are zeroing in on Vermont and soon their freedoms will be removed.

Scott,
"Five miles" East will bring you to
my home here in New Hampshire which has a shall issue policy ($10 fee, good for 5 years) and is class 3 friendly. Come visit some time and I'll take you to the range or hunting in the woods behind the house. Deer, black bear, coyote, moose, turkey- they're all here!

Think!

I'd like to nominate my home state of N.C. but can't do that. We do have CCP with training and backgound check and it is still legal to walk down the street with a visable sidearm. I would like you to consider Montana! They have repealed many of the laws we face (Brady etc) and have added safe firearms training in the schools. Check out www.mtssa.org (Montana Shooting Sports Association. It is impressive what they have accomplished in that state in just a few years. Way cool.........Now if I can just find those dad burned longjohns I'll be heading that direction. Wait, I think I've lived here too long and the blood has thinned to much to survive in that climate. A feller can always dream can't he?

New Hampshire's pretty good (as Patrickt66 pointed out above). Our downside is black flies, mud season, a looooong winter - for example, it snowed here last week. Really.... sigh...

Unofficial State Motto: "Mind your own business" - and that's fine by me.

Slightly OT, but gosh, I thought I was the only guy in New England here.

Any Northern New Englanders interested in some summer get-together, maybe food and loud noises? If so, e-mail me, and maybe we can generate some interest with a post over at Lock and Load.

Maybe Vermont deserves a closer inspection...
But until I can do that - AZ gets my nod. Oh - and Gunsite is right there...

Oh - wait - so are SOLAR FLARES... Alright - Vermont gets my nod.
:D

So c'mon up George! I know I said New England, but you could come too. I feel it might be....interesting.
Let's not forget the many fine brews crafted right here in the Green Mountain State too!
:D
