Most accurate revolver?

What is your take on what the most accurate revolver is. In ny opinion it would be a Freedom Arms 357. My reason for this is because it is what most Pistol Sihlouette shooters use. It has won more world titles than the others. Any one else have an opinion? Justify your reason also.

Most accurate revolver.

The most accurate revolver I own is a 1955 Target model S&W 45acp revolver. This revolver has been uncanny in its ability to shoot lead bullet reloads into small groups at 25 yrds. and is a wonderful Pin gun with the same loads. It has a very smooth triger pull in DA and a very crisp let off in SA. I'll never let it go. :D

I don't know much about "tricked out" target guns but I know what the most accurate off the rack revolver is: the SW686. For the simple reason it comes with a smooth DA trigger and that's what determines accuracy for most shooters. I shoot mine (with a 6" barrel) freehand at 17 yards and almost have to try real hard to pull a shot bad enough to get a hit farther than an inch away from target center. The gun almost shoots itself. I also have a 4" barrel model 66 that is just about the same for 17 yard accuracy.

His 1955 Target model 25-2 is very much available "off the rack". We have one in the house, a pinned-barrel 6.5" version, as well as a 5" 625-4 "Model of 1989".

586/686 = nice (have three in the house: 686 2.5", 686 6" and 586 8 3/8").

25/625 = nicer.

Short cylinder on .45 ACP N-frames combined with big charge holes means light cylinder mass to be rotated by DA trigger. Result? Amazing DA accuracy due to unbelievably sweet DA pull.

Freedom Arms, however, is in a whole 'nother league in the fit & finish department. Revolvers don't come much nicer, unless they say "Korth" on them someplace.

i used to think my python was accurate due to it's 1-14" twist and choked barrel...plus i was shooting PPC at the time and i cold almost hold my own against bull barreled smiths (local/state level)

then i handled a freedom arms .357 and it shattered all my fantasies about accurracy.

the only DA that might be in the league is the dan wessons

Most accurate handguns I own are my N-frames with a slight edge to the 6.5 inch 629 Classic DX. Came with a 25 yard factory target. Six rounds, one inch. Yeah, yeah I'm workin'on it. :)

For NM paper punchin I have been satisfied with the one hole potential of my Ks. K-22, K32, K38. Never had a genuine tack driver in the heavier calibers but my 6" 19-3 does an inch at 15 yds and that has been good enough to win bug shoots.

My 4" 29 is no target gun but it sho do like steels n shotshell hulls and breakin rocks :)

I had a 17-3 6" that, in the hands of a world class shooter, was every bit as accurate as a Pardini, Walther or Hammerli.

Individual guns probably make a lot more difference than Make or model.

Freedom or Dan Wesson

I haven't shot a Freedom for ultimate accuracy, but there was an interesting article in Shooting Times a while back. They tested a 7.5" model 97 (medium frame) Freedom Arms in .357mag. With patient development of handloads, they eventually were able to shoot 1-1.4" inch groups at 100 yards. Yes, I said that right, sub 1.5moa groups at 100!

That is better than many deer rifles.

Among my own revolvers, the most accurate was a Dan Wesson .44. With medium loads, it could do 1/2" groups at 25 yards, off a rest with a scope. Never tried it at greater distances

Have a Ruger Blackhawk colt. Shots all over the place. Handed it to a gnetleman on the range, for his take on the accuracy of the revolver. Shooting 5 shots with standing one arm extension, with the first shot for positioning, remaining 4 shots were touching each other. Determined accuracy problem was not with the gun, but with shooter (me!)

Gentleman said to keep practicing. He explained he had been shooting for 30+ years, with military training. Lesson learned that it's rarely the gun.

Another vote for the S&W model 686-5, six-shot .357 magnum with a 6" barrel.

Best Wishes,

I, too, would have to vote for the Dan Wesson .44 simply because I've had one for 16 years and have never been disappointed.
I've never fired a Freedom Arms. Sounds like I need to, though.

My most accurate custom revolver is my S&W 14 that was turned into a PPC revolver by Bill Davis. Slap this in my Ramsom Rest and shoot little tiny groups so often it gets boring.

My most accurate stock revolver is my 6.5" S&W610. I test all my revolvers in the Ransom Rest and fire two full cylinders to make sure I have its overall performance. It used to be a tie between my 6" 1955 Target and my 1988 model 5" 625 but when the 610 cam along they were knocked down to 2nd place.

My most accurate revolver is my Colt New Service Revolver in 45 Colt.It is a very ugly gun.But shoots like a dream. It used to be owned by the Canadian Mounties.

Opinions, Gun Rags Etc-

So JeffOTMG? Do you own and shoot either the German or French guns?
I havn't seen a Korth nor met a real person that has, I know some are out there but tend to believe the chap that springs $3k for one just keeps it in the safe.
The Manhurin (IMO, just shot two) is overpriced and not the equal of the Python or the Smith L or N frames.
Accuracy testing for high grade handguns should (IMO again) be done at 25-50 and 100yds to best evaluate anything calling itself a "Magnum".
The "Silly Wet" shooters that win are the Dan Wesson group and the Freedom Arms Fogies, I call them fogies because the over engineered Freedoms are basically an antique design still using the long slow single action cowboy gun complete with the ancient flat main spring with locktime about twice the DW guns.
The Dan Wesson guns while not as over engineered as the FAs have the tensioned barrel system that, if properly adjusted gives the highest probability of accuracy and do just that. I've lost count of the number of DW .44 R.M. guns that gave an honest inch at 100yds off bags with more than several different load combinations with medium through hot loads.

Were those Manhurins the MR-73?

Those are the guns that have given Manhurin its reputation.

Would like to find one someday.

'So JeffOTMG? Do you own and shoot either the German or French guns? '

HA!!!!! No, won't find me dropping that kind of cash on a handgun, maybe a Barrett M82A1, but not a handgun. Of course the question was what was our 'take' or opinion on the most accurate revolver. Seen both, shot neither. Not real impressed with the looks of the Manhurin, but the Korth is nice. I have friends that shoot in Pan Am games, shot Bisley in England, and have shot all over Europe at an Olympic level. It is where my Hammerli 208S and Sako Triace kit came from since they were banned in England. The Manhurin shoots VERY well according to those guys. The Korth has a rep over there as well, but they have not shot one, only seen it shot.

No Disrespect meant Jeff OTMG-

I'm just trying to cut through the romance of "Europe & English?) shooting contests.
Show me a young buck (or old timer) that shoots a 2700 regularly in an American NRA match with them there furrin guns?
Since us primitive yanks already have sixguns that'll hold an inch at a hundred yards, some exceeding $2000.00, I'd wager folks would spend an extra grand for a revolver/sixgun that would do say an inch at 200yds?
I'd swallow hard and buy any sixgun that could equal the T/C single shots accuracy.
Problem is Jeff, that gun ain't been built yet, anywhere.
Speaking of accurate German guns Jeff, have you ever run across one of those custom slab barreled Lugers with the BoMars and extra tall patridge front sight? I saw a pic of one on the net somewhere and had to get a drooling towel.
SHOT is coming!
