I've owned a half-dozen 'kit' .22's over the years. The best of them remain the 2" and 4" S&W .22/32 Kit Guns (later called the model 34, I believe) with adjustable sights.
A 4" Sport Ruger auto or Colt Woodsman also makes a great and accurate woods gun...if you have nice deep pockets.
The older Ruger Bearcats are also good little guns for the woods rover.
In a new gun bought today, I'd go to an auto pistol. The Browning Micro looks like a later version of the classic Colt Woodsman. And the Ruger Mark II comes in a 4" version. Both of these are reasonably compact and come with adjustable sights.
There's no need to go to a mouse-gun for your woods pistol...too much is sacrificed in thump and accuracy with their ultra short barrels and bum sights. A small light pistol is hard enough to hit with, without the addition of such handicaps.
