mossberg vs remington 870 what is better??

I am more of a rilfe/pistol guy I dont like shot guns that much. But i need one with a slug barrel for deer. So what is better the remington 870 or mossberg. The mossberg is cheaper so i am leaning towards that. This gun wont be used that much it will be be sighted in then be only taken out during season.

PS how would a red dot be for close range white tail... I have used them on rifles before but never a shot gun.

Probably in the minority here

But in 35 years of shooting, I've never owned anything but Mossbergs...Many,many round fired, and never a malfunction or any kind...Never hadda relplace a part either. Not to say the 870 isn't probably just as reliable, just my personal experience...

I currently have a Mossy 500 and it is great, you just can't pump it to quick. The smooth bore barrels on the 500 are approved for slugs so that would save you a little if you can find a good accurate slug to pair with the gun. Girlfriend's dad has the 870. I can't complain about it. I love the finish, no need to clean the outside to much. Good luck!!

As you can probably tell I use 870's. I would find someone who has both and shoot them see which one you are more accurate with. Ask around at a club or range I gurantee that somebody will have one and let you use it. If the mossberg fits better then the rem buy it or vice versa

I've never had a problem shucking the shell right after firing (It's more like during firing because the recoil helps the slide back, or at least that's what it feels like)
I have had no problems with any part of the mossberg 590 or 500, they are great guns and so is the remington.

You will be happy with either one, They are both top-notch pump-guns.

I'm glad you haven't had a problem, maybe it's just me. Maybe practice, maybe lube. But I don't use a pump for skeet anyway, just trap. If there is ever a need for 2 rapid shots in any scenario, you should just get an auto, or double, thats why law enforcement don't carry black powder single-shot handguns, it just makes sense.

Well I dont see why they wouldnt use blackpowder single shot flintlock guns.
Hey banger can you hold on for about 30 seconds I need to reload.

Another opinion

I've shot a Mossberg 500, 590, 835, and a Remington 870. I own a Mossberg 835 and it fits me very well. Maybe some of the reason I like the Mossberg is the tang safety. Being left handed it is in an easy position for me to reach, as well as anyone else.

As others have said, either one works. My brother uses an 870 and he loves it. I agree with Skeetin 870 that you should try out the guns you're lookin at and see what works best for you.

I gots 3 870s and love em. Reliable as death and taxes.
Also got a Mossy 500A in a pistol griped, Riot gun set up. Why? cuz it's scary looking.
I prefer the steel receiver 870s over the alloy Mossberg but thats just me. Aint nothing wrong with a Mossberg 500.

yea i like my 835 a lot. 28" barrel with a bead sight, i was shooting mid-20s in trap my second time out, ever. went well with pheasant early this year, getting a slug barrel and taking it out for deer here in IL this fall.

I have one of each, the 500a has a synthetic stock and the 870 has a wooden one ....the 870 has much better recoil than the 500. I would stay with the 870 unless you are planning on getting a wooden stock for the 500.
The safety is on the trigger guard on the 870 instead of on the reciever with the 500. I would go with the 870...By the way the 500a pistol grip is scary looking but who wants to charm a bad guy :D

If it were me I would go with the 870. I have 4 870's and I owned one mossberg int he past and it was broke right out the box. I'm sure this is not the norm for Mossberg as its a very popular and proven firearm. But it just rubbed me the wrong way. My father always told me not to buy a Mossberg, I didnt listen and the only one was lemon.

Thanks,
GW :)

For me the choice boils down to the safety. I like Mossy's thumb operatied saftey better than Remington's trigger guard positioned one... But I've also used Remington's enough that I'm used to thiers and don't mind either. Get the one that works/feels best to you. Especially if you're going to use it so seldom.
