Mossberg Rifles

I was reading a post on here earlier and didn't want to revive a post that was a few years old but I wanted to put opinion out there. I own two mossberg rifles. One is the mossberg atr in .243 and the other is a mossberg 4x4 in 30-06. I love both of these rifles and they are pretty accurate. Now I'm not the best shot out there but the .243 put some meat in my freezer last year and the 30-06 will hopefully get me my first black bear this year.

I killed my doe last year at 100 yards with a neck shot from my atr. Hit EXACTLY where I was aiming and dropped her on the spot. Great rifle, accurate and dependable.

The day I got my 30-06 I put 2 rounds touching at 50 yards. I only fired 3 rounds total to confirm the zero on the scope, which is a redfield 3x9. This scope is very nice as well. Extremely clear. I have no complaints with either rifle. The bad reviews I have read seem to be from when the rifle was first released. Maybe I got newer ones with the bugs worked out. I don't know but I have good luck with all of mossberg's products. I now have my two rifles and a mossberg 500 in 12 gauge. Seems to me like they are good value for the money.

Had one of these Mossberg Palominos for 40 years. Still my favorite 22. It was made before they started putting serial numbers on 'em. Beautifully made and crafted back then, even with these inexpensive rifles.

Airman - NICE rifle!

I am a huge fan of Mossberg shotguns. I also think their rifles have proven, in most cases, to be a great value in the entry level class. I had an ATR in .30-06 that was VERY accurate.

Mossberg have been making guns for a long, long time now. They are one of the most affordable shotguns ever made. No one should question their quality, while there are more expensive guns out there they have a long proven record.

I have never tried a ATR or the 4x4 but no doubt they are fine rifles. Those that have problems with one brand or another do so mostly because the do not understand the process of making rifles or are just using the cheapest crap ammo they can find.

I am a Savage rifle fan and for many years people turned up their noses on Savage and touted the value of Remington's, well Remington is making some crap rifles now but people will still swear by them. It is a matter of perception and each person has the right to think what they want, but we just do not have to agree with them.

As a side point Mossberg peaked my interest with their MVP series of rifles and when looking for a 223 bolt action rifle, between them and Savage I went with the MVP because it uses AR mags, has a fluted medium bull barrel and a adjustable stock, and a threaded barrel for suppressor or muzzle brake.

This one has not been to the range yet, I am still working up long range ammo for it. But I really like the way it was built.

I am sure that Mossberg will be around for a long long time making rifles and shotguns.

This is a Mossberg MVP-Flex 223

Nice rifles guys! Let me know how that .223 shoots. I was thinking about getting one of the new mvps for my next rifle but I'm concentrating on reloading for now.

OK, I don't mean to offend anyone, but whatever happened to those allegations from a few years back that the Mossbergs were shooting bolts into people's faces? They were serious enough and seemingly credible enough that a lot of people wanted to get to the bottom of them, and find out for sure if it was bunk, or real. So was it (a) bunk, (b) real and no corrective action taken, or (c) real but corrective action taken? I've been out of the loop, but most of you know what I mean. Any recalls occur?

Several people claimed to have been seriously injured when either the rifle fired out of battery, or fired closed but didn't lock up or some such.... never could determine the truth value of those allegations. Caused me to not buy one, but I'd gladly give them another chance, if they re-designed, or the allegations were disproven in court.

Here's an example of some of the allegations from c. 2008:

http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbth.../printthread/Board/34/main/213811/type/thread

I tend to think it was all overblown bunk, since you haven't heard of anyone getting hurt since then. Either that or they strengthened the bolt head pin so that it wouldn't break and fire out of battery. And/or changed the press-fit of the bolt body into a threaded or pinned design.

Update: Yeah, evidently it was bunk, between no problems since and this which came out in the Florida lawsuit (as paraphrased by a poster at 24hourcampfire):

The guy took the bolt apart trying to "smooth it up" & "fix it"
(sounds like a tweaker)

Also hitting it with a hammer to get the bolt closed???
(also sounds like a tweaker)

Wasn't legally entitled to own a gun because of his criminal background?
(more tweaking? grin)

Neighbor testified they were drunk every day before 8:00 AM.

Plaintiff testified he couldn't remember if he got phucked up on the day it happened??? grin

So evidently, he took the bolt apart and put it back together wrong, got drunk, hammered it shut, and fired. I wouldn't place that on Mossberg. Cheaply made or not, sounds like this was a bad / undeserved rap.... so let's carry on. :)

Having said that, there's *some* contra in this thread - may be a very lame, borderline-defective design (possibly): http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/3288632/19

I just want to get past it and figure out once and for all whether to warn others away or wholeheartedly recommend at that price point. Some people's faces might be improved with a bolt stuck through their cheekbone (like mine), but it's a painful, expensive, tough way to do cosmetic surgery.

Old Mossberg .22s ==> Outstanding, like most all old .22s. Airman Basic, that's a beauty!

I will read those threads in a minute. I have heard of those allegations to but never found a recall or any other information other than some saying it had happened before. I know both of my rifles lock up positively and my face still looks the same as it did before I owned these rifles!

Off the bench, my ole Mossberg 308 will put three 175gr sierra MBTHPs in a three quarter inch(3/4") group at a hundred yards. I have not done a single thing to the trigger, bedding, or action. As for my face, it is still just as handsomely rugged ugly(according to the wife) as ever:D.
I have been eye-ballin a Mossberg laminated 30-06 down at the LGS a lot lately. Can't think of a single reason not to get it. I have been thinking about it for a while now but, just can't think of a single reason not to go get it. May have to go get it and quit worring about it, probally sleep better at night if I did:rolleyes:.

I'm sure you would sleep better if you went and bought it! I have the mossberg 4x4 in 30-06. It has the laminated stock. It's pretty nice but it's a little different. Kind of black and green mixed together. I do love the rifle. It's heavy but I like the weight. It still feels like a canon when I shoot it tho.

:D We need a big ole "LIKE" button! If'n we had one at the end of his post, I woulder click on it a half dozen times or so:D

I picked up one of their MVP's last year in .223 (subsequently reamed to 5.56), and it's a little tack driver. The trigger was easily adjustable to just a hair under 16oz.

My only complaints, and they are minor: The length of pull on the stock is too short (fixed with a slip on pad adding 2.5"), and the action was initially quite gritty and rough (fixed).

It's the only Mossburg I've ever owned and I'm quite satisfied with it printing half MOA groups with 62gr BTHPs. I run a phantom can on it almost exclusively.

I took the 4x4 3006 out today and had a .75" group (center to center) at 100 yards with factory 180 grain remington cor-lokt rounds. I was happy to say the least. I'm still using my redfield 3x9 scope as well. Just wanted to keep the updates out coming.

 Outstanding!

I have no problem with the quality of Mossberg firearms. My son had a Bantam that he shot from the age of eight to twelve and then my grown daughter used it for several years. I then bought their Turkish made SA-20 and the bolt realease button didn't work. I didn't have a problem with that b/c every gun maker puts out a less the perfect firearm occasionally.

I judge a firearm maker not just on the quality of the firearm but on the quality of their Customer Service too. That is where Mossberg let me down. I'm not going to spend 30 minutes typing my CS saga with Mossberg but the experience was a nightmare. I finally called their headquarters every day for a couple of weeks asking to speak with Alan Mossberg which I was never able to do and didn't expect to. After two weeks I received a call from CS telling me they were buying the shotgun back and would send me a check which took a month to get. So I'm leery of buying Mossberg for that reason. The shotgun I replaced the Mossberg with was a Weatherby SA-08 which was excellent so I bought my daughter the youth model. It jammed from the get go but I wasn't worried b/c I had dealt with their CS twice before and it was outstanding. I called Weatherby, within an hour had a shipping label emailed to me, and ten days later had the shotgun back fixed. In rifles I buy Weatherby or CZ because of the quality not only of the firearm but also b/c of the CS.

I did give their customer service a call last Friday. Not because any thing was wrong with my firearms but because I wanted to see what they were like and what kind of information I could get on my rifles.

They were honestly, di**s to say the least. They were really rude and didn't seem to really care about their image. I honestly hope I never have to deal with them because I have a problem with my firearms. I'm sure it was a nightmare as you claimed.

I did get the years of my rifles were manufactured and twist rates but that's about it. They claim they will send me the manuals for them but we'll see if they follow through on that.

Another company who has EXCELLENT customer service is Taurus. I had previously owned a pt111 millennium pro. I called them and informed them one magazine didn't feed quite right and a new one arrived at my door in 2 or 3 business days. No questions asked, no additional money spent, and I got to keep all 3 magazines.
