Mossberg Rifles

Consider carefully what mshunter says. I've never seen a Savage bolt action rifle that didn't shoot with incredible accuracy--right out of the box. They may not be as pretty as some, and they may not be overpriced--but they come in a lot of calibers and sure do shoot straight. Plus, they are made in USA!

Savages are good rifles too - I do remember this thread starting asking for opinions on Mossberg. The Mossberg is just as good as a basic Savage or Stevens. The stock is much better IMO not as flexable! BUT they don't have the upgrade aftermarket stuff. Either way you'll have a good basic hunting rifle.

Do some searching in here and on the net regarding the Mossbergs before you set your mind on one. For instance, my mossberg 4x4 laminated 30-06 was the single most horrible consumer experience I've had in my short 40 years on this planet. Others have had worse experiences with them, at least mine didn't land me in the hospital or mutilated for life. Seriously....look into it.

Tikka, Savage...and several others can get you into a very accurate AND affordable rifle without the worry that it may blow up in your face or be the least accurate rifle you have ever handled. Some have had great mossberg experiences but the opposite end of the spectrum is reported out there as well. Personally, after mine and watching my friend struggle with his....I wouldn't use a mossberg as a crowbar. I owned mine for 4 months, it went back to mossberg once on warranty, to a local gunsmith trying to find the problem and eventually I returned it to mossberg. They will not refund the money and I will not accept the rifle back. So, rather than own that rifle or take the risk of selling to someone while knowing there is something very wrong with it.....I ate $550 and told them to keep the rifle. I feel like I got off cheap compared to those who had them blow up in their faces.

Your mileage may vary....the above is my only experience with Mossberg.

Good reports at Gun and Game, Gunweek, Shooting Times etc Google "Mossberg ATR" etc to find. Now as far as them blowing up in peoples faces I haven't heard of it till now. I searched trying to find the reports but didn't. I am more than interested to read those reports. Maybe billindenver could help?

We each make our own decisions with the information we have available to us. I didn't find this story until after I had returned my mossberg with the instruction for them to keep it. Mine would shoot 100 yard groups measured in feet, and occasionally hit the target next to mine at 100 yards. The bolt felt really sloppy and the trigger was the worst I had ever used. After I read the below story and another like it I considered myself lucky and left it at that. I'm not saying all Mossbergs are problem children but mine certainly was and when something goes wrong in a rifle, bad things happen. When mine went back to the factory it was because it was shooting wild and the extractor fell off the bolt. Anyway, read the below and make up your own mind...personally, I think mossberg has some QC issues.

Mossberg 4X4 338 Win. Mag

I just purchased online a Mossberg 4X4 338 Win. Mag with synthetic stock. After receiving the firearm is was very easy to disassemble because all of the screws holding the action to the stock were finger tight. The bolt release lever screw after several operations unscrewed and fell out. The trigger assembly screw (a counter sunk flathead with star washer crushed) was loose allowing the trigger to wobble. When tight the screw sticks out of the trigger assembly about 1/8 of an inch. The trigger adjustment screw which is supposed to be flush with the trigger housing projected about 3/16 of an inch past the housing and needed to be screwed in. My biggest complaint is that the receiver screws will only engage 2-1/2 threads into the receiver and firing one round loosens both screws when torqued down significantly. If you don't mind having a barreled action stuck in your face buy this firearm.
