HI I live in new mexico and am goign to go deer and elk hunting for the first time and need to buy a rifle. Any suggestions on caliber? I am probably going to buy a remington but when i went to the mossberg site i saw a 100 atr night train .308 was wondering if mossgerg rifles are any good.

Isn't there some getto booze called Night Train?

I don't have a Moss, but isn't it obvious, Remington vs Mossberg rifle???

The mossberg comes in a package with scope mounts and pods all attached for just 500 I dont want to break the bank and spend almost 800 for a good set up which is probaly what i will pay buyign a remington i could be wrong

True, cheaper is always nice, but if I were on a hunt, and was planning to do it more than once, I would go with the more reliable.

You can get some nice Remingtons in 308 for around 500, they have some out now that are "tactical" black with a bull barrel that are fitted with a cheaper synthetic stock that are for about $550 I think. I can't remember the name, you can go look on Gunbroker.com to get an idea of prices.

Also, Savage rifle have a good reputaion of being very accurate and very affordable.

For really cheap you can get a Mosin for about $100 give or take, and ammo is the 7.62x54R (about $5-$8 a box) which shoots a little like a 30'06. I wouldn't hesitate to take one on a deer hunt if I didn't have a nicer rifle.

I have a 100 atr in .270 Its a real good no frills kinda rifle. Its shoots very well and so far I have had no problems. I'v got about 400 rounds through it.

I just looked at your link to the Moss, this might be another indication of quality...

All rifles with bipods on them I have seen have had the bipod fold forward, accept one guy at the range who mounted it backwards, though a former SEAL there let him know.

That gawd awful scope on the Mossberg Night Train is a Barska. You will absolutley hate it after your first trip to the range. Anything above about 6X and a little shooting, and you will develop a hangover quality headache. Package scopes are never top quality optics, especially when they are made by Barska.

That is NOT the top shelf setup that it appears. My suggestion is to save your money, buy a unscoped Mossberg ATR in 30-06 for about $250 from Wal-Mart, then spend another $275 for a Leupold VX-I 3-9X40 and a set of Weaver scope rings. You will have a rock solid rifle that will probably outlive you, and likely will never fail you on an expensive hunt.

They had a 100 ATR in 30-06 at the local sporting good store and I looked it over a bit. I was not even a bit impressed, not even for the $380 they were asking brand new with scope. The trigger was just plain nasty. Probably around 8-9lbs.

I'd much rather see you buy the Howa/Hogue/Nikko package (also available in .308). The Howa is a darn good rifle on it's own, but with the sweet Nikko Stirling Nighteater 3.5-10x42 scope you're ready to rock. At a street price of around $500 it's a much better deal than the Weatherby Vanguard/Bushnell package.

thanks good link from looking on internet i cant find a howa site but seeing lots of stuff saying howa rifles are weatherby rifles ami right or wrong

ATR's Junk???

No no no...the ATR isn't junk. Most of the people that had something bad to say don't own one! It's like saying a Savage rifle is junk because its got a flimsy synthetic stock! Well gues what Remchesters do to! I own many quality rifles and one of them happens to be a Mossberg ATR 30-06. The bolt is smooth, the trigger is good - but I've shot better, the rifle shoots MOA groups. Tell me what more do you need in an inexpensive rifle??? If you want a high "quality" rifle that will probably shoot the same out of the box go for it...it's your money. There's plenty of great reviews on the Mossberg ATR out there!

Howa makes the Weatherby Vanguard and rumor has it even some of the high-end Weatherbys but they are not exactly the same. It's the same basic receiver with a Weatherby designed bolt and a Weatherby spec barrel. Whether one is better than the other is a toss up. The Howa will shoot MOA (1" @ 100 yards), the optional Hogue stock is much nicer than the cheap stock on the vanguards, and the Nikko Stirling scope is actually a good scope - much better than the cheap low-end Bushnell bundled with the Vanguard.

FYI, I have the Howa/Hogue/Nikko package in 30-06 and the stock trigger is pretty good. Mine breaks crisply at 4lbs, but if you want a lighter trigger you can always drop in a Timmeny later for about $80. I don't think you'll need it but it's an option. Anyway get somebody to bore sight it for you and then take it to the range and dial it in for about 200 yards and get some practice.

Any caliber from .30-06 down to .243 will be fine for deer. For elk most people would say .25 caliber would be a minimum.

If you're looking for a inexpensive rifle then buy used. Check out pawn shops and gun shows. You should be able to find a good rifle and scope for less than $500.

I haven't heard anything specifically wrong with the Mossberg. I have heard some general complaints about it not being as good as comparably priced alternatives.

first of all, i had a mossberg 100 ATR in .270 and i will say it was a decent rifle. however, the "night train" setup they have is crap. Barska scopes are junk, and i dont know what is up with that bipod but it looks kinda cheap, so it is not worth $500. only complaint i have about the ATR is the molded studs on the stock. i had one break on mine. a screw in type metal stud will fix that problem though. if you're really on a budget, the mossberg with a $100-$150 simmons or bushnell scope is the ticket. if it were me personally i would go with the savage stevens rifles. you can get them for around $300 and are scary accurate for what you pay for them. my buddy has one in .223 with a $100 simmons whitetail classic scope on it and can shoot sub-moa groups no problem.

I Don't own an ATR but the young fellow down the road from me workrd all last summer saved his money an bought 1.He brought it up to my place to try it out and sight it in.It is not much in the looks department thats for sure, and once we got that junk scope off of it(replaced it with a Mueller) and sighted in it shot sub MOA( just barely)Everything functioned well, smooth bolt the trigger was a little creepy but I think it will straighten up with use.As far as I can see it is a solid rifle and a good starting place for a young shooter with not a lot of cash! His is a .243 and he has used it to smack Songdogs out to 200+ yds and is going Whitetail hunting in Wisc next fall.Good luck with what ever you choose ELMOUSMC

I've read a couple of articles on the new Marlin bolt-action in the latest magazines. They have a barrel-nut and "safety" light trigger similar to Savage, but the list price is under $400!!! Accuracy, as tested, was very good.

The gun writers seem to think it's a great gun and a fantastic buy. The extractor looks very strong. Stock design looks very good also, but it's hard to tell without holding the rifle. Marlin (Rem) has a pretty nice bolt rifle. It's hard to imagine the price holding at that level very long.

hard to tell from the picture but it sure looks like they stole the accu-trigger design for the new marlin bolt action...the barrel nut makes it look like a savage too

AZN505,

Yes, that is my Mossberg ATR 30-06. This rifle was a budget rifle. I wanted to see what $350ish would get. Everything you see on it was purchased at Wal-Mart that includes the rifle for $249. The bipod is the shooters ridge "Rock Mount" $39. The Scope and rings are the Centerpoint Adventure 4-16x44mm IR that Wal Mart sells for $69. The sling is an uncle mikes $5.

The rifle is a tack driver and the trigger is 4lbs accourding to my trigger scale.
