Mossberg 590A1

I've heard about the differences in the Mossy 590 and the 590A1, the 590A1 being more rugged and having the bayonet lug. I want it.

Here's what I want, I think.

A Mossberg 590A1, the one with the metal trigger guard and saftey and the bayonet lug, maybe with ghost ring sights, and preferably with a heat guard (it looks cool).

Can I have my FFL just order me a 590A1? Will I need the exact item number? I mean, I don't want to order a 590A1 and end up with a regular 590 with no bayonet lug. I want a bayonet lug, if, for no other reason, than such things make Diane Feinstein wet her pants.

So, how would I go about getting one, assuming I had the cash (which I don't, but you never know)?

Here's the one you want with ghost ring sights: Stock no. 51663, or without ghost ring sights: 51660. The bayonet lug comes only on the 20" barreled models, not the 18.5" barreled models. Stock no. 51668 is the same as 51663 except it comes with a speedfeed stock. I don't think the 590A1 comes with a barrel heat shield but you can always add one. Around $400 is a good price for the 590A1 with ghost ring sights.

The stock numbers for the 590 with plastic parts have a 0 for the second number, i.e. 50663, 50660, and 50668.

Bayonet lug may get in the way of a standard Surefire Responder weaponlight unless you get the new model 623A which moves the light bezel down to accommodate the lug.

Now to figure out how to get a side-mounted sling swivel for the front sight base so the sling doesn't obscure the light beam. :(

Heat Shield, not really

Bayonet Lug--absolutely necessary. After all, Diane Feinstein doesn't want you to have one.

Although I haven't tried it, I think a bayonet handle could be adapted into a flashlight holder. I ordered an attaching bracket from cheaperthandirt.com. It's called a Universal Barrel Mount.

REgards.

RE: side mounting sling bracket.

Get one of the Scattergun Tech. sling brackets. They are made for Remington, but with a little grinding they will fit the Mossberg. If you can get one made for the 11-87, it may fit without modification.

DML,

I have a Mossberg 500 with the Sure Fire light and a 590A1 that's getting one. The A1 barrel is much thicker. Do you think Scattergun's 11-87 side sling will work with both barrels with modification? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Craig:

The SGT sling mount won't work on your 500 because of the way the barrel is fastened to the magazine tube. You could have the side of the barrel lug drilled and tapped for a sling stud.

I'm not sure that the 11-87 bracket will fit a 590-A1 without some modification, but it should be close. All you might have to do is open the barrel channel a little bit.

Thanks Dennis. I'm trying to avoid tapping the barrel lug because it's so far forward. The SGT setup allows for a shorter sling and getting it out of the way of the light. That's the way my pre-ban AR is configured and it works well. I'll order one adapter and see if I can make it work. At $10 it won't be that big of a loss if I screw it up. Report to follow.

The heatshield won't work on a 590A1 due to the heavier barrel according to the folks at Mossberg. I checked right before I got my 590A1 a month or two back.

Supposedly the heavier barrel has better heat disapating qualities and doesn't need the heatshield.

The regular 590s, at least the early ones like mine, had bayo lugs (except the Mariner). Also, the models with the ghost ring could not be fitted with a heat shield due to the tall front sight.

Oh, if your gun is like mine, you might have to grind away a small part of the barrel retaining nut to fit an M-9 type bayo due to the thicker cylindrical handle. An M-7 will fit without any modifications.

And yet one other thing, if you do modify or find an aftermarket heat shield to fit the 590A1, you can still get a ghost ring by fitting an MMC sight on it like I did.

I have a 590A1 with Ghost Rings and 20 inch barrel (model number 51663). This gun has performed perfectly and is quite strong, as well as accurate. I love the 9 shot capacity too.

My 590A1 came with ghost rings, bayolug, heatshield and speedfeed. Today I added a side saddle and a home made tac sling. It sees patrol and SWAT use.

heatshield?

It came with a heatshield? Does it not have the heavy barrel? According to the Mossberg website, they don't have a heatshield modeled 590A1 becasue the barrel's too thick and they'd have to make a special heatshield just for it.

I bought a 590 several years back. Mine came with factory ghost ring sites and a bayo lug. I added other accessories such as a heat shield, side saddle, xenon light with pressure switch that sits to the side so bayo (M7) fits on it....My next venture will be to put on a Choate Pistol Grip Stock and Vang Comp it. (Vang has gone up in recent years though, but it's worth it)...My trigger group seems to be metal. What is this about 590A1's were the 1st to come out with metal trigger groups? 590's are mil spec and must pass rigorous tests to claim they comply with military specifications...Correct me if I am wrong...

I could be very wrong here, but it looks like the 590A1 is being confused with the 590.

The 590A1 has a metal safety and a metal trigger guard. The 590A1 also has a heavier thicker barrel which means that a Heat Sheild will not fit.

I guess the best way to tell if your gun is a 590 or 590A1 is to look for this marking on the gun's left side.....

What is the spirit of the bayonet?

To kill, kill kill without mercy, Sergeant!! (hundreds of boot camp privates yelling this at once...it was creepy)

Can somebody post a pic of their M590A1 with the bayonet on it? :D
