Mossberg 500 VS Remington 870

Those who say one is better than the other is picking hairs off the same animal. It's all preference, neither is really "better" but you may like one better than the other...personal choice based on usage, comfortability and personal preference.
 
Both are perfectly serviceable shotguns. I prefer the 870, but suggest that you go handle a few. Better yet, get thee out to a range, and politely ask the guys out there what they're shooting. That may well get you the chance to actually shoot a couple.

I'd also suggest watching the classified ads for them. Since you say that you want to "get into" shotguns, you'll need to be careful, and educate yourself as to what to look for, but both are models that I would feel comfortable buying used. A good used price means more $ for shells!
 
I have an old browning O/U but it's more of a family heirloom at this point(it belonged to my dad). every once in a while one of my brothers takes it out and puts 3 or 4 shells through it but it usually bother me for some unknown reason. I dont normally get wrapped up into sentimentality but I just cant bring myself to shoot that pretty ole browning

THAT'S what you should be shooting - much nicer gun, well made and will last a long time with reasonable care

Out of the two... I would personally take the Remington. Made of steel, dependable, and I don't care for a tang safety.

The real reason I tend to favor the 870.... the gun shop I work for gets a lot of returned M-500's with issues. Makes me personally uncomfortable with them. Not saying 870's are never brought back with issues.. but the amount of new M-500's I see with issues is much more frequent for whatever reason.

I am not trying to bash the M-500 I know plenty of people who have and use them.

That being said.. right now... my go to HD shotgun is a Winchester 1300 Defender. Paid $150 for it. I spent more than that on ammo in the same day. :D

AND my go to turkey gun is generally my Winchester 1300 in Realtree hardwoods.


I have/had plenty of other shotguns... Fox Sterlingworth, Mossbergs, Remingtons, HK - Fabarms, for my "working" shotguns.. The older Winchesters (haven't tried the new ones) and Ithaca's have never let me down.
 
I have had both and they are both very good at their job. I currently own just a 870 and think its the bee's knee's. I would choose the remington everytime over the mossberg, even though the mossberg is a fine shotgun.

500's are bad about dumping ammo on the ground as it comes out of the magazine instead of feeding into the chamber.

The tang safety is NOT located on the tang as it is on double shotguns. It is mounted on top of the receiver where it is often bumped off, and sometimes broken.

While it will not be an issue with most shooters the 870 will hold up to long term use and abuse much longer than the Mossberg.

There are no doubt some 870's leaving the factory that needed a bit more attention before they left, but most of the 870 problems are easily corrected, usually by a bit of cleaning.
 
i've shot both, i own a 500...

i don't like the safety position on the 870 as much as i do the safety position on the 500, though i do find the 500's safety more difficult to operate to be honest, maybe mine is just stiff

the thing that makes me choose the 500 over the 870 though is the slide release position

the 500's release is beside the left rear of the trigger guard, i can easily operate it without moving my hand from proper firing position........the 870's release is beside the left front of the trigger guard, which requires me to re-adjust my grip to operate it

i bought it used, previous owner told me he had probably 1,000 round through it since he bought it new and i've personally put probably another 500 through it, and i've never had any type of malfunction with it

i'll take a pic when i get home to show how beat up it is

if you count the gun itself, pistol grip, the shorter barrel, and the forearm, i've got around $200 in the gun, that wouldn't buy me a used 870 around here....

Then I just exchanged the term "Malfunctions" with "Problems"
Mossberg 500 Problems: 140,000 results
Remington 870 Problems: 302,000 results

I guess we're back to Ford vs. Chevy

I have owned both a couple of times in my life ended up selling a mossberg a couple of times, no specific reason why other than I needed the money and my first shotgun was the remington. I always liked both of them and I am currently saving for a mossberg 590 :) point being...buy both :)
 
Look for a deal on a used but excellent condition Wingmaster. If you buy a Mossberg, check out cheaper prices at the box stores. For casual use the Mossberg Maverick might work. $157 was the last discount price that saw.
 
Both are nice, I grew up on remington's so I'm partial to them. Just like other's have said, Ford vs. Chevy 50/50... I have a remi 1100 for hunting 870 for the house, however I took my father n law and good friend to purchase 500's for the home.. Try both and roll with what feels good.
