Mossberg 500 or Remington 870???

Why do I like my Mossberg?

It's lighter.
No loading gate.
Practically feeds itself.
It fits me better.
One extra shell.

I'm certainly not out to put thousands of shells through this gun, so if the aluminum parts wear out after a while, so be it. No kids for it to be a family heirloom.

I shoot clays with it, works just fine for that purpose.

Hard to go wrong with either. I've had both. I ended up keeping the Mossberg 500 over the Remington 870 because I shot better with the 500. Better in the sense that I score better in skeet/5 stand/sporting clay with the 500. Better in trap with the 870. It's a wash when used in 3 gun matches. Even in trap I was closer to the 870 with the 500 than the other way round in the other games. Try them on for fit. Pick the one that's easiest to make hits with. Cost shouldn't be much of an issue, both are some of the best values going. Still the 500 will be a little less costly new or used overall. I doubt a single shooter could wear either out in a lifetime of normal use. You can't make a bad choice from these two.

I have both and I have many barrels for both. I do a lot of grouse and rabbit hunting. In which the gun goes through a lot of brush and bad weather conditins. The Moss is easier to take completely a part, clean and then put back together then the Rem. Plus I do not mind all the dings and marks it gets from being out in the woods hunting. Why buy a high end shotgun for $1,000.00 and feel bad about it getting bang up while hunting. The high price gun does not make you shoot better or allow you to see more game. A rem is a smoother cycling gun but 80% of the time, I only need one shot unless I kick up two grouse or two rabbits (I never miss, ha ha)

I shoot the maverick which is made by Mossberg, just has the safety in front of the trigger guard topped with a 20" accu choke barrel, light weight, well balanced, does not kick like a mule. The Military uses the Mossberg 590.:) , very reliable and durable, never has failed me

Lili,

The 590A1 Action Bar stroke is shorter than on the 870. The 870 is smoother, but when I'm in a hurry I have enough strength to cycle thru any stiffness the 590A1 has.

One of these days I'll get the two together and measure the actual length. Remember; If it's only X amount of difference, you still need to double that X amount because it has to both move forward & back, -on each shot. And when you fire a boat-load of rounds in one stage it makes a difference.

On the street I don't think you would see the difference. I wouldn't know. I do most of my shooting on the keyboard.
