I don't shoot surplus- but the above post nailed it. You need to run an oiled patch down the bore after rinsing out the salts, and then cleaning. And if the rifle is to be stored for any length of time, do it every few months.
Also as mentioned above- don't forget the boltface. After all, the primer is where the salts come from- so any gas leakage, or blowback past the case is going to leave residue on the boltface.
Many of us are so used to modern chrome-moly barrels that are more corrosion resistant (not to mention stainless) and we often never run oiled patches through them after cleaning (even though we should) and the barrels don't suffer.
I use Wipe-Out as a bore cleaner, which leaves a corrosion resistant film.
