Mosin-Nagant

the mausers are basically a big boned girl with a lot of meat on them bones.

the 91-30 is heavy, but shes a trim ballerina. Balance is superb. I wish i could find what company is supposedly making new production 91s this year. read about it on here. supposedly only gonna cost 300 bucks.

the 7.62x54r itself, ive seened it compared as an equal powerhouse, possibly more powerful then this '7mm08"

Mosins are good rifles if you find the right one. Cheap, reliable, powerful, and indestructible. Just be sure to clean out all the cosmoline that they come packed in.

If you want one, try to avoid anything that was manufactured right in the middle of WWII.

I can give my personal examples of the 4 I own

1938 Tula Arsenal, Excellent condition; very nice hardwood stock, excellent bore, no machine marks, great bluing, not counter bored, nice bolt, fantastic trigger, passes No-Go gauge test.

1943 Tula Arsenal, VG condition; appears to have been made in a real rush, appears to have seen lots of use, not counter bored, tool marks still plainly visible, OK bore, laminate stock with a partial replacement, OK trigger, passes No-Go gauge test.

1937 Izhevsk Arsenal, Excellent condition; very nice hardwood stock, no machine marks, great bluing, not counter bored, excellent bore, nice bolt, very good trigger, passes No-Go gauge test. not quite as good quality as a Tula IMHO, but close.

1942 Izhevsk Arsenal, Good condition; A real beater rifle, some very rough machine tool marks visible, laminate stock with uneven finish applied, bolt is pretty loose and sloppy, rifling worn, trigger very poor, fails No-Go gauge, passes field gauge.

As you can see these rifles are all over the place as far as quality and amount of use. I used the same condition grades that was noted on them when I bought them, I don't necessarily agree with all the grades.

The one I do agree with is my 1938 Tula, I ordered it from Buds Guns sight unseen for $129, it was graded Excellent by someone, it's a dang nice Mosin for sure.

mosin nagant is a very common rifle these days for those who want high power rifle, which is easy to use at a low cost

its bullet the 7.62x54r is in between the ranges of 308 and 30_06, meaning it will have heavy impact on anything you shoot it at. and can be used for long distances

now i wont get your hopes up in accuracy, most mosins are decent shooters ,but most shoot high right. and have bad groups. some is due to the shooters mainly being new. or the rifling is not good or pitting in the barrel. these are common factors in mosins.

also if you get one, it is normally not in brand new condition, it most likely used in a war or conflict. this adds a history flare to it,and is another attraction to the rifle

Mosins are also common hunting rifles, i know i can go get a box for 8-12$'s and shoot, this means low cost ammo and gun.

maintenance wise its easy, bolt actions are simple in design, the only difference is some ammos are corrosive for the mosins, so you may need to get Windex or hops gun cleaner to neutralize the barrels acid powder left from the. otherwise clean and grease for me is usually under 10 minutes(i use non corrosive rounds)

some mosins are accurate and im glad my first one was, i had lots of tips when hunting for one and they did help me to discover my beloved mosin, so if a mosin is your choice ask for tips for spotting a good one ill leave a few for you that helped me.

Now, my main draw to the mosin was the price, and the ability to customize it easily. due to its popularity, there are many accessories ,stocks, and equipment you can get to make your mosin creatively yours and unique. now the historians mosin users dont like this, but the sporter, target ones do. so its up to you to look into it or not i have a blog on mine to jump start some ideas and such, feel free to use it.

TIPS for mosin hunting
-bring a flash light and shine it down barrel, if metalic silver, and good rifling its a good one.

-check to make sure all parts have matching numbers.

-look for sales, big five has a few and it got me mine for 98$'s

-dont settle on one if its all thats there, be patient

- check for rust

-cosmoline is good but it will take you some work to get it all removed(its the gooey stuff to prevent rust)

- make sure you get a bayonet, pouches, cleaning tool and such

hope i helped you. ill post a few pics of mine so you get an idea of what a 9130 mosin looks like original and modified.
