Mosin Nagant

Hey guys, I'm pretty new to the forum, and I was hoping to get some advice about buying a Mosin Nagant. I want one just to have fun shooting it, and maybe keep it as a collector, but I just think it's a bad ass rifle in general. So, how much do they generally cost? Are there different versions of it? How easy are they to break down? Where are the best places to buy them, pawn shops, online broker, etc? Thanks in advance.

You can find them everywhere, generally the usual ones should be under $100 for a regular 91/30 model. Some have the modified bolt and scope put on them for much more $$$ and some have the old hexagonal shaped recievers which make them more collectible.

Personally, a good bore and action is more important than how the stock looks but you can find some nice laminated stock rifles for more $$$ also.

I happen to fancy the carbine models more though, like the M44 in particular. :D

Whatever you are looking for, don't pay $200 for one like I see on auction sites because you can find them for WAY less. J&G sales has some laminated stock 91/30's for sale right now that look nice and they have the hex reciever rifles too.

koolminx- where did you buy yours for $75??? Sounds like I can definatley get one for under $100 which would be awesome. Also, how easy are they to mount a scope on?

check big 5, dunhams (sp?), local gun shops, gun shows... they are every where. i got mine at big 5 for $75, but the price has gone up a little.

What ever you do, don't pay more than $150 without doing some research. some are worth $200 to over $1000, but you need to be a collector and seriously know what you are buying before you shell out that much.

As said before, don't pay more than $150-200. a m91/30, m44, or m38 should cost somewhere between $50 and $150, depending on condition and where you buy it.

If you try to haggle and they wont budge lower than $150, just walk away, it not worth more than that. I might pay $200 for an ex-sniper that is in amazingly good condition or $300 for a nice Finish m39, other than that i wouldn't pay more than $150.

There are hundreds of Mosin Nagant variations with thousands of different markings. Prices can be between $75 Refurbed M91/30 to $10,000 Original Finnish Snipers, be sure to go to 762x54R.net to learn before you commit a purchase

It's best if you can hand-pick the one you want, in my experiences with them, the bores can be good or terrible, and some have great, smooth actions, some you will end up swearing at. like stated above- know what you're buying. They've got some crap-ola going for hundreds right now. have fun looking!

Mosins come in many different configurations.
Among the best in consistent accuracy are the Finnish ones.
The M91/59 carbine is also noted for its accuracy.
The Soviet Mosins can be a crap shoot when it comes to accuracy but generally they are 3-4 MOA rifles.

Last fall I got the Mosin itch and found a walnut stocked M44 with a pristine chamber, bore, bolt, everything! I found it at a local Big 5 and it was priced at $79.95. Although Mosin Nagants right next to it in worse condition (M38s, M91/59s, and even other M44s) were priced $180-240! It turned out to be the BEST money I have ever spent on a firearm. Big 5 seems to be a good place to go, if you have them around you check them out.

Just be sure to thoroughly inspect before you buy!

Big 5 add on sunday had them on the front page. Russian Mossin's for $99

I guess the price has gone up about 10-20 bucks from their previous sales

Lots of my thoughts here:

And to address one topic that hasn't been addressed yet...
How easy are they to break down?
Very, very, very easy by bolt-action standards. The Mosin-Nagant is a strong, simple, and crude design reminiscent of a farm implement; this is at once its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. ;)

All routine disassembly tasks can be performed with a large screwdriver, a medium-sized screwdriver, a block of hardwood (I'm not kidding), and the multi-tool, which is a teardrop-shaped doohicky with a screwdriver tip at one end and four slots in one side. The multi-tool is necessary to correctly reassemble the bolt, so make sure your rifle comes with one!

Some subassemblies and parts can be hard to remove, such as the metal escutcheons around the sling slots, the stock tabs that hold on the handguard clips, the stock reinforcing bolt, and the rear sight. However, most shooters will never have a reason to remove these parts.

Thanks for all the help and info guys! I am going to go check the local pawn shops today and see if I can find one, and there is a Big 5 here in my town, and they have them for $99 through Nov. 7th so I will go there last if I can't find one anywhere else.

I bought a carbine M44 for about $80. A real nice rifle, sturdy with a good laminate stock. This rifle will always go bang and ammo is still abundant and cheap. :)

Well, just bought the 91/30 from Big 5! Good lookin bore and the action is smooth, incredibly oily though. I will post pics soon.

Sorry for the grainy pics, my nikon is down so I used my phone cam. The wood is in pretty good shape, kinda hard to tell from the pics.
