Mosin Nagant rebarrel?

so I recently saw that some guys have successfully converted a few Mosin Nagants from 7.62x54R to 45-70 Government...

I wonder how hard this would be? would it be as simple as a rebarrel and cutting the bolt face?

I kinda want to make a short barreled Mosin flame thrower (If I can find one cheap enough) and figured the 45-70 would be an easy conversion (since I own and reload for other 45-70s) if I find a cheap donor with a shot out bore...

what do y'all think?

(I'm not looking for accuracy just something that would be fun to shoot)

I'm not sure about magazine feeding and relation but if you fed it individually all you would need is to rebarrel and cut the bolt face.

Beyond that there could be problems with the magazine, length of rounds and feed ramp. I'm sure someone here has done it and knows first hand.

Couple of comments on the linked article...
He could have used the same mandrel, set in a second position about .100 back from the locking lugs to true the recesses. In this position it really helps if the receiver has been d&t'd for a scope mount, giving a couple of extra holes to work with to secure the mandrel.

He didn't go into detail, but I'm sure he milled a flat on the back end of the mandrel to use the sear screw hole to keep the action from spinning on the mandrel. A couple more flats up front for when the mandrel is moved back to work on the lug recesses.

Not to say this, and more receiver truing such as re-cutting the threads needs to be done...and for a 45-70 I wouldn't go to any more trouble. A target rifle, I would.

To answer his question at the end- the T-53 receiver was made without an inner receiver ring as they were much later manufacture from 1953-1960.
The Soviets did away with them post-1941 (probably due to more expedient machining in wartime), and re-barreled receivers prior to that date may have also had the inner ring machined away.

Sure you can, but why bother changing the chambering? Trust me- a 16"-17" barrel on a Mosin-Nagant will have enough unburned powder flying out the end of the barrel for the fireball, and the surplus ammo is still going to be cheaper than anything you can reload.

I'm re-barreling one for a customer now with a McGowan barrel, he sent me his action with a cut-down 17" barrel to make shipping easier. I'm thinking about using that take-off for a fun "stubby" project :)
