So much for the argument only police should have guns...

TERROR IN CENTRAL PAR

By JESSICA GRAHAM

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TERRIFIED TARGET: Anne Peyton Bryant returns to the scene of yesterday's attack. She says she was never so terrified. - N.Y. Post: David Rentas

A woman mauled by a band of hoodlums on a Central Park sex-attack spree said she clawed her way out of the crowd as her frenzied attackers tore at her clothes and cheered, "Go! Go! Go!"
"I bit, scratched, chewed and screamed," said Manhattan resident Anne Peyton Bryant, who may have been the first victim in a wave of assaults after the Puerto Rican Day parade.

"I've never felt so terrified in my life. I couldn't see anything but the faces around me and the water. I couldn't even see the sky above me," she told The Post.

Bryant, 29, said even worse than the attack was the response of cops who ignored her after she reported the incident and warned them others were in danger.

The terror unfolded just after 6 p.m., when Bryant was finishing her daily loop around the park on rollerblades, accompanied by a male friend on a bike.

She came upon a large crowd blocking the exit on Sixth Avenue, a heavy smell of marijuana hanging in the air. A group of men closed in, drenching her with beer and water.

"I still wasn't afraid. I figured it was a hot day and they were just playing and having fun," she said.

She realized it wasn't a game when the men pulled her down. They also attacked her friend, hitting him on the head and trying to steal his bicycle.

"I thought they might have a knife or a gun," she said. "I couldn't tell how many people were grabbing me."

Bryant - the marketing chief for a dot-com who moonlights as an aerobics instructor - used all of her strength to fight the band off, kicking with her rollerblades.

Curling into a fetal position, she was able to keep her shorts up around the top of her thighs.

"They were all screaming, 'Go! Go! Go!' It was being encouraged," said Bryant. "I think the whole crowd was enjoying it."

Finally, she heard a stranger emerge from the crowd and say: "This is too much."

"He said, 'Hold on to me, baby,' and I did. He and another man pulled me out of there."

She thanked the men and went in search of the police, but all of the officers that she approached told Bryant - who was crying, soaking wet and covered in dirt - there wasn't much they could do.

She said none of them radioed other cops on the parade detail about the roaming thugs.

"Oh wow," one officer, in a scooter at the edge of the park, told her when he heard her account.

Bryant said she approached another officer in front of the Plaza Hotel.

"I was attacked. Something bad is going to happen over there," she told him, motioning to the area where she was assaulted. "It's out of control. They tried to pull my pants down. You need to radio some officers to move into that area, it's out of control."

He suggested she talk to other cops sitting on the steps of FAO Schwarz. She said those officers told her to bring her complaint to the Central Park precinct, but she was afraid to go back into the park.

Instead, she said, she skated to the 17th Precinct, where an officer told her: "You've been sexually assaulted. You should come back tomorrow when you've calmed down."

NYPD spokeswoman Marilyn Mode said the department is investigating police handling of the incident.

For Bryant - who came to New York from Virginia six years ago - the police response was more disturbing than the assault.

"I wanted the police to do something, to go and make my city safe. But they just stood there," she said.

"I will never be able to embrace New York the way I did before. I love the park. I love parades. But it will never be the same."

"Embrace New York"? It needs to be flushed.

"A serious felony has been committed in front of multiple witnesses? Go home."

Oh yea, that's police protection.

I'm not getting into "blame the victim" here, but:

"A smell of marijuana hanging in the air...a group of men closed in, drenching her with beer and water... 'I figured it was a hot day and they were just playing and having fun,' she said."

Hello??

OTOH, I suppose if someone asks them, they'll agree that it was "all in fun".

They probably did have 'fun'. I'm with Jeff, CA, though, in that she's a first class ninny if she can't recognize a dangerous situation like that. She certainly didn't deserve the treatment she got from the stoners (or the cops for that matter), but she never should have gone near the scummies.

I love NY (NOT). M2

CMOS "it needs to be flushed"... Just think of the environmental impact if that Human toxic waste dump was flushed!

The victim is just another twit from out of town who came here to the big city to have fun. She probably thought she could get away from any danger. She is probably a liberal who hates guns and will vote for Hillary. Except now she will probably become a NY conservative.

A NY conservative is a liberal who has been mugged.

Anyone who thinks that it can't happen to them, especially in a place like Central Park, is a fool.I am glad I live in a part of NY that still allows citizens to own firearms.

Somebody go post this on the MS. board!!! Sure call 911, you can really depend on those dedicated NYPD boys. She ought to be glad they weren't around, they would have tired to 'cop' and feel too. I am going to NYC and be a criminal, it is too easy. Gotta finance my trip to England, the land of mild and honey for thieves.

DUH! That woman was a MORON for going near that group of men in the first place. I'm not saying she deserved what she got, but she didn't show too much common-sense.

And the antis say we should give up our guns and rely on the cops to protect us? NOT! :mad:

Ok. Frst all we know is what was reported in the mainstream media and we all know how accurate that is. Right?

When I read about the story, the impression I got was that there was a parade going on and some kind of celebration. Broad daylight. Lots of people around. Families etc. Lots of cops around. It wasn't a "bad neighborhood" in the middle of the night without anybody but the "wolf pack" around.

Soooooo.....lighten up on these women for cripes sake.

Further thought: I just read the thread about Tamara being in a motorcycle accident and my initial reaction was very similiar to all of you who are calling these women morons, etc. I had a brief exchange with Tamara over at GT a while ago concerning Harley's which she likes to bash. It ended amiably, but I came away with the impression that she wasn't really all that experienced with bikes and likes to ride fast so....my first thoughts were that she had probably failed in one of the following areas (not that it was her fault though):

1. You always assume the car driver does not see you;
2. You always assume the car driver will turn in front of you;
3. You always assume the car driver is incompetent if not downright evil;
4.You stay aware 110% of the time;
5.You ride paranoid as hell;
6. Never ride on public roads at more than 7 or 8 tenths.
Do all of the above and if you're very lucky, you just might never get screwed up on a bike.

Then I read farther down the thread and got more details and it looked like Tamara had pretty much been doing all of the above and got nailed anyway.

This brings me to my point which is:
I still think you should lighten up on the women a little;
I had the exact same reaction as the ones I'm telling to lighten up. sigh.

BTW no slight is intended toward Tamara and my prayers go out for her speedy recovery.

It could be the woman is a twit but the tretment she received from NYPD is as criminal as the treatment she received from the

s in the park.

Phil - FWIW, last time I looked, NHTSA stats indicated that in car/bike collisions, the car was at fault in over 90% of the incidents. Your advice is certainly good and spot on, but the odds ar definitely against the biker, even when you do everything right.

Yesterday, Hizzoner the Mayor of New York City said on this topic: "It is unrealistic to assume that police officers can be everywhere at all times, particularly when they are dealing with a parade."

You mean that citizens might have some responsibility for their *own* defense? I'm shocked, shocked I tell you....

Hey Mayor, we at TFL have been going on about this for quite some time now...

I am dissapointed at the TFL members critical of the right of the women to be in a public park in the middle of the day. How about the couples invloved? (Especially in light of the apparent fact that there were police around.) Anyone who has ever been to Central Park, or any other large park, knows that it is is not as easy as "simply avoiding the people."

[Sarcasm on] Yep you guys are right. Women should not go rollerbalding in the park, with “MALE” companions in broad daylight. In fact they should not go out in public at all. After all if they happen to get around the wrong area or worng people it’s “HER” flat if she’s attacked.[Sarcasm off]

Are you people for real?

What he said.

Picking on the victims accomplishes nothing. It's not like they were wandering around the bad part of town after dark. A city park in broad daylight with 10,000 people around is NOT a high-risk environment, Sunday's events notwithstanding.

There are two real problems here:

1. The behavior of the molesting mob. How the h**l did we reach the point where we're raising a generation capable of pulling this sort of crap?

2. The reponse (or lack thereof) from the police. I expect that frankly, they were afraid to face a mob and afraid that if they had to take positive action against a minority they'd let the city in for another lawsuit. Guliani was on TV this morning tap-dancing around the issue like Gene Kelly .

I would add a third to David's list - the response of the crowd.

<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Verdana, Arial">quote:</font><HR>"They were all screaming, 'Go! Go! Go!' It was being encouraged," said Bryant. "I think the whole crowd was enjoying it."

Finally, she heard a stranger emerge from the crowd and say: "This is too much." [/quote]

WTF?!? It saddens me (but does not shock me) that a crowd in a public space would sink to the lowest common denominator, and not intercede.

Under the laws listed by simonov jr listed for NY at http://www.thefiringline.com:8080/forums/showthread.php?threadid=27403, there was more than ample justification for a 3rd party to intercede, with force, and break it up. But no one did.

Why? They were conditioned to “let the police handle it”? Not my problem syndrome? They were waiting for something really bad to happen? They were scared? They were enjoying it?

The official response to this incident addressed the fact that the police can not be everywhere at once. I think we all agree on that point. However, the police do not NEED to be everywhere, if the citizens act as a community. When they act as spectators at the coliseum, the animals will rule.

Hopefully, people, gun owners or not, will take this incident as an opportunity to ask what they would do if they happened upon that type of scene. Maybe, next time, the response will be different than spectators at a school yard fight. Those who witnessed and did nothing should hang their heads in shame.

Rant mode off.

Some background here. There was a parade going on at the time. It was an "ethnic" oriented parade.

NYC is always dangerous, at any time of the day anywhere.

People will not help you if attacked, the lady was very lucky that two men stepped in to help her. This is not usually the rule. People are disarmed, the attackers most likely are armed.

All the martial arts in the world will not help you if there are more than two attackers, the only thing that will help is a handgun, if you know how to use it!

The woman should have left immediatley after she was squirted, she had rollerblades and could have left quickly.

Tourists are an easy mark because they don't live here and are not aware of the dangers. Any native NY'er would have avoided the mob.

One lady said from now on she will carry a cell phone while jogging. Fat lot that will do, punks like to mug you for the phones!

NYC cops are gunshy after the Diallo mess and several other publicized incidents, and Al Sharpton, who will defend every dirtbag as long sa their skin color is right.( OK so call me a racist).

If you know a young lady who wants to move to NYC, try your best to discourage her. She will be an easy mark untill the first time she is mugged, if she survives. ( Spare me the I know someone who has lived there for years and has not been mugged, they will be eventually)

All the wealthy people live in forts, learn how to run from danger and how to avoid problems.
