Moose tougher than Elk?

HEAR, HEAR!

I think many Magnums are sold to guys that haven't hunted a lot but have read a lot or are not that good of a hunter in the first place. This is just a personel observation from guys you meet out hunting. I know this does not hold true for many good hunters but does have merit.

Right on rem33

First Freedom..... Go BUY the new rifle. It doesn't even matter if you use it for moose. Buy it anyway. Just say we told you to do it. :) :) :)

Maybe this will give me a reason to buy a .35 Whelen or 9.3x62mm rifle.

Man, these are two of my all-time favorite calibers. I'm afraid a new rifle is in order, as your .30-06 just isn't going to cut it for moose. ;) I think I'd opt for the Whelen and a couple of boxes of the 310-gr. Woodleigh Weldcore loading from Double Tap. That would definitely leave a mark on any moose.

OK, .35 Whelen it is - but which gun? Converted Mauser 98, used Remington 700, or new Remington 750 semi-auto? Or should I just quit screwing around and get a CZ550 Safari in .375 H&H mag?

Thanks for the help - y'all are so understanding to a gun nut's needs. :)

Not sure as to what your price range is, but the Remington 700 CDL in .35 Whelen is a sweet rifle. The 750 is a nice gun as well, but I tend to prefer bolt-actions in hunting rifles.

Buy the rifle, who needs a reason. As for moose I've shoot a few 1 ,20 ga slug 20 yds, 1 12 ga slug 65 yds[long shot] 1 308 50 yds a couple or more with 300 mag[definate bear country].1 bow kill.was with my son for his moose 1 cow 30-30 15 yards ,1 45-70 20 yrds, was also with my hunting partner for most of his kills all since we started hunting together over 15 years ago all were killed with a 300,mag 165 gr bt. We only had to track one my sons kill with the 45/ 70 shot on the run died about 50 yds in the brush.

Moose are Tough!

I hunt moose every year up here near Thunder Bay. So far most of our kills were with 180gr 308 s.Also 338,6.5x54 Mannlicher(one shot!},3006,358 win and 303 Brit. And my first moose was taken with a #5 Lee-Enfield(jungle carbine)Some 29 years ago! All our Elk are a "protected species"and cannot be hunted, the fine is 25000$ and a 5yr license suspention. Regards to all you fellow moosers! Jim:D

I have come to a decision re: a new rifle

After much thought, as much as I want a Remington, I decided that I will be getting this rifle:

http://www.czusa.com/product_detail.php?id=17

in 9.3x62mm. Reasons being:

-Handled a CZ550 yesterday and had forgotten how much I like them - how finely finished they are, etc.
-I want the controlled feed of the CZ550 over the push feed of the Rem 700 or the semi-auto 750, for potentiallly dangerous critters,
-Love that set trigger of the CZ 550, and finally,
-9.3x62mm splits the difference between .35 whelen and .375 HH mag, so it's fits both niches - can double as an african plains game rifle if I ever make it over there (not that a .35 whelen wouldn't; but a Euro caliber might be more readily accepted as a substitute for .375 HH over the .35 Whelen). Plus the caliber is just different, and I like being different (if it ain't .30-06, such that you can find ammo anywhere - i.e. .35 whelen - then may as well go REALLY different). And finally,
-the big kicker: I MUST have that beautiful turkish walnut mannlicher/bavaria style stock on a rifle soon, and this rifle kills 2 birds with one stone, so to speak. I'm jonesing real bad-like for a mannlicher style, and need the good stuff, baby!

My mind is made up, unless someone wants to talk me out of it. Still would probably just use .30-'06 for moose, though, so as not to scratch this baby up - ha. Take it as a backup rifle maybe - yeah, that's it. With those cool irons on the 550 FS, however, I may have to use a see-through mount, or go altogether scopeless the way god intended.

I want to thank you all for being massive enablers for the addiction. :) Maybe I'll come up there and hunt meese in thunder bay and take in a maple leafs game, jim - what happened today - Islanders win or Toronto in?

I still want to get a Remington to thank them for dumping Zumbo, but it'll probably be in .30-'06 or some other common caliber which I already have.

Looks good to me and I am a Remington fan. I keep reading how push feeds aren't as good but after a few thousand rounds, no failures yet.
I thought that was a good price on the CZ, and you can always beat MSRP.
All I wanna know is how it shoots and how you like it.
Gosh FF ya gotta kill the meese with it, dings in a hunt like that are good memories, and to me add to the rifle. Try not to get any but no big deal if you do a little one or two.

You know, it is a tough call between the two. The CZ should serve you well and 9.3x62 is a proven big-game cartridge. If you stop and think about it, the 9.3 Mauser IS the European .35 Whelen. Keep in mind that ammo for it will be more readily available in Africa AND a lot of countries over there allow it to be used on dangerous game.
