Posting on this forum, as handguns are my main interest.

I'm moving to that area next week, and would be interested in any comments as to a place to shoot, or a good (or bad) gunshop. Also, I'm not clear on the application process for CCW permit, and any counsel would be welcome.

TIA,

Bob

Bob,
In Pennsylvania, the process you go through is as follows:
1. Bring along your driver's license and proof of address (i.e. telephone bill, bank statement, credit card bill) to the County Sheriff along with $21.00
2. Fill out the application
3. Wait 3-6 weeks for the card to tell you to come pick up your permit
4. Picture taken and get new style permit
The picture part might be first. I'm not quite sure. My CCW is still the old style.
The permit is good for 5 years.

Don't know where abouts in Montco you will
be but here's where I go:

Lower Providence Gun Club
Egypt Rd, Oaks.
The financial secretary may help you
610-666-5220

There is a nearly secret public range out at French Creek State Part, out Rt 23 West about 15 minutes from Rt 100.

Towards the BucksCo side,
there is Target World in Chalfont.

Cheers

Svt;
I think the CCW varies by county on the waiting period. When I first moved to Pa. I lived in Schuylkill County. I brought my guns from NY and called the local SD. The deputy I spoke to told me there was a 6 month waiting period to establish residence. Later on I spoke to a boss who told me that wasn`t necessary and to come down anytime. When I got there, I filled out the form, got my pic taken and gave them a check. I got my license on the spot. It took about 20-30 minutes. I thought at first it was professional courtesy but there were civilians there and they were treated the same. I`ve heard there`s about a two week waiting period in Luzerne County but it`s a paperwork backup.
When I moved to Carbon County I called the SD there to change permits. They told me to wait until my present permit expires and then come down. It expires the end of this year so I think I`ll mosey down early and see if they`ll do it beforehand.
There`s something in the law about carrying at a state range. If I`m not mistaken there`s no such thing as a CCW on the range itself. I other words, if you`re going to shoot the pistol you carry, don`t have it concealed on your person. At least this is how I interpret it. I could be wrong of course but better to err on the side of caution. They also have a 5 round restriction on handguns and 3 on shotguns and rifles. I don`t know how the private ranges work. SVT or anyone else, please feel free to correct me on any of this.

I've never had a permit other then my Lancaster County one. Around here, you can carry however you want at the ranges. Of course, just as long as you're safe. It's best for you to call the Sheriff's Dept. Bob. If what dinosaur states is true, then you may have a shorter/longer wait. The procedure is still the same. You should like Pennsylvania. We are a bit more laxed when it comes to gun laws. More so then our three neighbors, The Socialist Republic of Ohio, New York and New Jersey.

I live in Bedford County. When I got my carry permit I had to get my picture taken, and wait about a month. My friend just got his in DEC. of 1999. He said they took his picture and handed him his permit in about 20 mins. using the "instant check" system.
Mine is a cheap piece of paper that I laminated myself, his looks like a drivers lisense. I'm not sure if this varies from county to county, but the new permits are much nicer and more durable!

Welcome to the "neighborhood".
Montgomery County is a great place to live in.
There are still plenty places to buy and shoot.
Lived here for a year now – love it.
If near rt 232 drop me a line.

Dunno about Montgomery County, but in Carbon County (Jim Thorpe, PA Sheriff is where you go) I had my CCW in 15 minutes. Walked in, looked at my drivers license, had me fill out a form, called me in, took my picture, handed me my card. Easy as that.

I'm also a member as The Firing Line PLEOA range in Whitehall, PA off of 145. It's, like, $200 for the year for unlimited. Reloads are $12/50, targets are $0.20 to $1.20. If you bring your own everything, you shoot for free (well, with exception of the membership).

Feel free to email me at sciri@transient.net with any other questions.

Already got a couple emails asking where The Firing Line PLEOA range was:

The Firing Line PLEOA
5581 Roosevelt St.
Whitehall, PA 18052-1207
610-262-7751

Nice clean indoor lanes, lots of fresh air.

Sciri;
Thanks for the info. I didn`t realize it was near Allentown. I go there every couple of weeks to do some biz with a friend. He probably knows the place since he`s into it too.

Welcome to Montgomery Co.
You have to pick-up the applications (2 forms) at the Montgomery County courthouse, Sheriffs Dept. Then take the one form to your local police dept for their approval (week). Then take both forms back to the courthouse where the clerk at the Sheriffs Dept collects fee, takes your picture and hands you the permit (15 minutes).

Thanks for all the info! The permit process is now not a mystery to me!

Can anyone recommend a shop in the Collegeville, Schwenksville, or Pottsville area that carries reloading supplies, and/or is an equitable place to trade?

Thnaks,

Bob

Bob;
There`s a gun dealer in Schuylkill Haven which is south of Pottsville who seems pretty decent. I did a transfer there but I dont have the name handy. You shouldn`t have any trouble finding it in the phone book. E me if you can`t find it.

I live in Lancaster county and getting a CCW is pretty easy. All you need is 2 pics of yourself and fill out the application which takes very little time. Not much differtent from getting a drivers liscence you will wait about 6 weeks to get the CCW though

Mont.Co. is real easy on CCW applicants,it`s no sweat. Target world in Montgoneryville is a decent shop but very pricey. Gun and Archery Outfitters on 309 just N. of "5 points" has a pretty good selection but is also a pit pricey. Don`s Guns right at "5 points" has a decent selection, some antique guns too and resonable prices. If you don`t mind driving a little try Tanners in Jamison. They have a great selection, friendly staff and good prices too. Marcus

Glad to see all you guys here in PA. Bob you may want to check some shops out in Reading.
If your coming up from Philadelphia area to Pottsville you will travel through Reading.
Some good shops to check here. Will email you some if you want.
Hope this helps :)

Happy Shooting :)

Bob,

You may also want to check out the local gunshows for reloading supplies. I buy all my bullets from T & T Reloading, based out of Easton, Pennsylvania (http://www.tntreloading.com) but they come to all the big gunshows. Since the Valley Forge gunshows were canceled, I'd expect I'll see them next at the big MAAC gunshow at the Harrisburg Farm Complex in May.

There is a nice web site which might be able to help you out on places to shoot at http://www.wheretoshoot.org -- or you might try places suggested by our readers at http://www.members.tripod.com/~jth8260/shoot.html

My favorite gunstore at the current time is Shyda's Gun Shop and Clothing Barn in Lebanon, Pennsylvania (off the intersection of Route 322 and 72).

HTH,

Justin
