Modern M1 Carbine

Is there a rife with similar properties as the M1 Carbine in terms of handling, range, fire power, magazine fed semi auto, and hopefully better accuracy?

Saw one in the pawn shop but the only thing I did not care for was the availability of the caliber locally.

The closest I can think of is the Beretta CX4 Storm...

16 inch barrel
magazine fed
nice open sights
reliable
150 yards(ish) accurate range
light
Wood furniture preferred
rugged

At lest this is what I think of with the M1 Carbine

Yep. sounds like the mini-14/30. I would say 150yrds. with the mini-30, probably double that with the mini-14. The tactical models are 16'' barrels with wood if you want, magazine fed, with very good open sights. You will not find a more robust and reliable carbine in my opinion than the mini.

What M1's are the best quality?

New production copies?
USGI only?
Auto Ordnance?

Personally I am not a fan of paying for an older one, I only care if it is a good shooter.

I always hear good things about the Auto Ordnance M1's. I wouldent hesitate to buy one if thats what you want. Although yeah, ammo isnt cheep :p

Other than that, I'd find one of the 16" Mini 14's with the wood stock and call it a day.

So far, my two M1 GI carbines consistently outshoot the four AK's (two 5.45 and two 7.62x39) that I shoot. Either I have exceptional M1 carbines, or most all carbines will group better than AK's So, for accuracy sake, it's hard to beat the M1 carbine in a similar package. Now power and overall reliability are areas that the AK's probably have it over the carbine.

I have two WWII carbines. Both are exceptionally accurate. I also have a Mini 14 and a 30. The M1's are much more accurate although much less powerful. All are good for their intended purposes though. I do not have a high opinion of the AK and do not own one.

I've always thought that a carbine in 7.62 Tokarev, like the M4 uppers that are available now, would be ballistically similar to an M1 Carbine.

Every year my Club has held a “Carbine Match” just after our “Garand Match”. For the Garand match you are allowed to shoot NM versions of the Garand. For years the good shooters would shoot scores in the 470’s out of 500 points with their Garands. These same shooters would struggle to break 400 with the Carbine. For years our record high with a Carbine was in the 420’s.

One shooter found an Iver Johnson Plainfield carbine and his score jumped.

I am of the opinion that GI carbine barrels are just fine for rock busting but are not at all target grade. Commercial versions of the carbine easily have better barrels than the war time production barrels on our vintage Carbines.

What M1's are the best quality?

CMP Garands, they start at $495 for the rack or field grade and go up. Nothing wrong with the Rack Grades, I never say one that couldn't keep the groups in 3 inches. That would clean the CMP GSM targets. The scores are screwed up because of the shooter, not the gun.

Also the CMP sells M1 Ammo for the Garand for about 50 cents a round. Its good non corrosive ammo.

Also NM Garands aren't authorized in CMP GSM Games, some local clubs may allow them, but they are supposed to be fired in the Modified Garand Matches.

GSM (like most rifles) are won and lost on your hind legs, not your belly. Most and I mean about 80% should be done off hand.

As for the original topic. The USGI Carbines are again capable of cleaning the GSM target (SR 1 200 yard reduced to 100). I haven't seen any commercial Carbines that will compete with the USGI when it comes to reliability. As for ammo, its available and at reasonable prices. CMP sells 500 rounds for $200. Again, its good, non corrosive reloable ammo.

I still think someone out there needs to make some M1 Carbine Paratrooper- style folding stocks for Ruger Mini's. I'd buy at least one.

carbine

The M1 carbine round was/is considerably less powerful than the Soviet x 39, don't ya think. And the carbine was intended to be of "pistol power" a replacement for a pistol basically, easier for GI to shoot and hit with, right?

Pretty much nothing in the league of a m1 carbine but a m1 carbine. The step up to anything in the Mini family is a big jump in power. Not a bad thing, but not the "equal" of the .30 Carbine round either.

And the auto pistol carbine, the Storm and the defunct Ruger P9's or whatever they called them, ARE way behind power wise. Do they make a Storm in .45ACP?

Although the mag capacity is not there, and the mag fed new model .44 autoloader, the Deerfield, is now defunct, it is close in my mind to what the M1 carbine should have been, power wise.

Finally, what about something like the Ruger Police carbine,, or an M1 carbine, but in 10mm???
The Glock carbine conversions in 10mm are interesting, (can't think of the outfit that makes them) .

Some brainstorm ideas

I liked the idea of an M1 Carbine because it could be used for HD without being a "super magnum" or something of the like. Don't need to reach out and touch 600 yards for this (thinking of the 5.56/223).

The CX4 is close but for 45 I think it hold 8 rounds. Unlike 15 with the Carbine.

While we are on the subject of Carbines, the CMP is now selling M-4 Carbine Bayonets, $15 & $25.

I just got mine, looks like its never been used.
