Proof marks mean what?

Do those proof marks mean that they fired a butt-whomper super-duper magnum anti-tank round through each of the 6 chambers in that gun?

Really, do proof marks mean there is evidence documented in steel that the gun has been abused?

No. Proof marks are there to comply with the laws of the country to which the gun was imported, and to make sure they will withstand an overcharge specified by the laws of said country.

and to make sure they will withstand an overcharge specified by the laws of said country.

To me that seems like they will actually fire the gun with the overcharged rounds, then send it on saying "it didn't blow up for us, best of luck later".

So the next person gets a damaged gun? A cylinder on the edge of grenading apart? Am I being silly for wondering?

Bart Noir

Proof marks have nothing to do with proof loads. They simply mean the hardware was built to specs and accepted by the government body that ordered them. It's no different than proof marks on military surplus arms.

But those military marks are the results of inspectors overseeing manufacturing, quality control, and final products when the weapon was first taken into service.

Are you saying that the Euro country that stamped the OP's gun was only saying, in effect "This is a real S&W."

Hmmm, buyer don't bother to beware, Big Gov is doing it for you.

Bart Noir

Bart, lighten up already.
Measurements are taken. Specifications are checked. If it is accepted the gun gets stamped on all the major parts.

No need for panic or conspiracy. You obviously have limited exposure to manufacturing and government contracts.
