Model 10 info please

Another Model 10:

It is also a "no-dash" model". The stocks are old, but not original and it shows a lot of holster wear. It is a real gas to shoot. :)

A lot of people commit murder. A lot of people cheat on their taxes. A lot of people voted for Obama. Just because a lot of people do it doesn't make it right. S&W never used that term and you're right about people using it who should know better.

I usually don't get too uptight over terminology but there are a couple that send me up the wall. "Pencil barrel" is near the top of the list.

Colt never used the term "Artillery Model" for their Peacemaker, either, but it's an accepted designation in wide use outside the company.

When collectors, or fans, adopt a term as a designator & use it widely, it becomes "validated" by mere usage, regardless of purist opinion. :)

I just looked in over at the S&W forum. Those who use the term "pencil barrel" get corrected to use "standard or tapered".
The OP's (and mine as well) is certainly tapered.

Thread is just in time!
I just bought a HB Model 10 from a buddy for only $200! What a steal! It is a British Police Constabulary surplus gun and the reason it was so cheap is the surplus stamping numbers across the sideplate and on to the frame. Yea it ruins collector value but it dosen't harm function!
I got to shoot the gun before turning it over for registration processes and it's a tackdriver!
The gun is for self protection, HD and general purpose shooting which it should do well. It's tight and shows no mechanical defects or sighns of excessive drag. In fact it feels like a new gun!
This thread and info answered many questions of mine!
I will NOT be using +P ammo though since it is regulated to 158gr RN ammo. Why harm the gun? I figgure if a standard load won't do it then it's time to reach for my Vaquero .357 Magnum or the 12 Ga pump!
Thanks guys for all the great info!

Jeeze......sometimes it amazes me how you guys can dissect a thread over something as simple as a barrel description, spelling, lack of a comma in the proper place, a speck of lead in a barrel and on and on.....
I guess I shouldn't say "Jeeze" as I might get called to task for that !

I don't like pencil barrels either. Bull or taper look fine to me.
I was referring to how they shoot, particularly in fast double-action...not on how they look. But I agree, the heavy barrels look better to me also.

you model 10 guys wanna read about a model 10 357 mag, I just wrote a book about mine in the sticky,,smith and Wesson serial numbers search lol I don't wanna type all that again here lol so please read my post in that sticky, if you have any info about the gun I`d love to hear it :)

DPris- I got that same "common usage" excuse from a newspaper editor when I pointed out he had misused the word decimate. Decimate means to reduce by 1/10th. Annihilate means to utterly destroy but many (including some who should know better like a newspaper editor) substitute decimate for annihilate.

I really don't consider myself to be a purist, but words have meaning, and I believe they should be used correctly. "Pencil barrel" is totally wrong in my book. It is slang rather than correct terminology.

I know some don't care. That's a shame. Maybe I am a purist after all.

Potato, potato. :)

You & I are probably among the only six people left in the world who know (or knew, before your post) the difference between decimate & annihilate. :)

Words evolve, terms change, usage modifies.

Many firearms terms are either still slang or started out as slang.

There's a place for purists.
There's a place for slang.
Occasionally the twain may co-exist. :)

There's also a place for words that have multiple meanings, as almost all do. Decimate, as an example, has at least 4, one of which is "to cause great destruction or harm to".

There's word "purists" and then there's "intentional selective bias".

In any case, these arguments always amuse me. There's Long Colt/Short Colt, there's silencer/suppressor, clip/magazine, pistol/revolver, hell, I've even seen Luger/Parabellum.

It's amusing, if nothing else.

You're right. It's slang. So what's the problem with that?

I've called this one a "pre-10" once in a while just to see that "fingernails on a blackboard" look some people get. ;)

And yes, I know it's a 1955 M&P 38, standard barrel. And the grips aren't original.

C'mon, that was hammered by the late Col. Cooper on all his readers back in the good old days...

Or did you mean we're among the last six Cooper readers left?

Ha, I kind of cringe at "pencil" barrel too, but I love tapered barrels and find them much more aesthetically pleasing. BTW, I started out calling them pencil barrel too, but learned its more correct to use "tapered."

Have a look at these two guns...

They both have the same barrel profile but it's easier to see on the blue gun than the stainless.

What term do you use to describe that bbl? The stepped down profile that is a bit larger in diameter at the frame, and has an upper rib?
