Just my .02....
Most of the sightings we as a people see, are normal training missions....you guys out west and southwest get many more fighters and other type of jets than we do here in the midwest, and the northeast get a lot of C-130s (just a few years ago when they shut down Richards-Gabaur AFB here, our C's moved to Mass. and the A-10s moved to Omaha & Wichita) the A-10's stationed in Omaha (just one wing) do all of their fire missions at the ranges at Ft. Leanard Wood.... so they fly many miles to drop and shoot......they normally do not fly over the cities but if they fly into Whiteman (Mo.) or emergency fuel in Olathe (Ks.,, the old Navy air station) we will see them.... and sometimes they are loaded for bear....back in '88, we even had a B-52 make an emergency landing at Gabaur and since my house is north of the main strip we heard it and rushed out to see it.... the normal landing pattern here would not have heard a thing as the base is ten miles south and the planes are normally about 2000-2500ft.... but THAT BIRD was slow & low and about 400ft so the noise was huge (every house and car alarm for miles went off)..... point.... worry about the ones you don't see......
