Million Mom Vote! We are losing...

The Moms Go Marching

As Mother's Day approaches,
we'll undoubtedly be hearing a
lot about the Million Mom March
on the National Mall in
Washington, D.C., to protest
gun violence and call for
reforms.

On May 14, organizers are
encouraging women to
celebrate Mother's Day by
putting "Congress on notice that common-sense gun policy --
specifically licensing and registration -- is the will of the people."

Here's a look at a few of the marchers' proposals and how they
jibe with the platforms of leading presidential candidates:

• Proposal: License handgun owners and register all handguns

Republican Texas Gov. George W. Bush, according to his Web
site, opposes government-mandated registration of all guns
owned by law-abiding citizens.

Democratic Vice President Al Gore, his Web site says, would seek
a nationally mandated, state-run system of photo licensing for all
potential hand gun purchasers.

• Proposal: Safety locks for all handguns

Bush supports voluntary efforts to equip all handguns with
child-safety locks. If Congress passed legislation requiring
mandatory trigger locks for all new handguns, he would sign it.

Gore supports mandatory child-safety locks on handguns.

• No-nonsense enforcement of gun laws

Bush supports stronger enforcement of existing gun laws, would
provide more funding for aggressive gun law enforcement
programs, and supports automatic detention for kids who commit
crimes with guns.

Gore supports increased penalties for gun-related crimes,
including the use of a gun in a violent crime, illegal gun trafficking,
and for knowingly selling a gun to someone ineligible to purchase
one.

Amy, Dallas says:

I am a teacher and a mom. For the last two years I have
watched in horror every time a school shooting occurs
thinking, "That could be my school" or "That could be my
kids". And I cry every time I see a news story about a
child accidentally shooting themself or another child. My
husband and I agree that as long as we have children in
our home there will never be a gun. I believe with
tougher gun legislation it would not be necessary to
have a gun in any home. I applaud your effort in what has
become an increasing problem in our society.

For the guys, when you go vote, use your initials instead of a male sounding name. That is supposed to be a site for women. It will have more impact on the socceer moms if there is not a lot of men putting their two cent worth in. :)

Does Amy from Dallas have her "This is a gun-free home" sign up yet?

Not for criminals, you understand, just so that the other concerned moms in the neighborhood know that Amy's is a "safe" house for kids to play in. Any other results from the posting of this sign in her front window are purely coincidental.

Does Amy also cry when she hears about another child drowning in a five-gallon bucket or taking a fatal spill down the stairs. Probably not. Likely she never hears about them, since the media doesn't find these dead kids newsworthy and therefore no tears are shed for these youngsters, who died in a mundane and politically correct way.

This guy voted under my psuedonym, "Danielle" - hey, it's Women.com - they don't care about a man's point of view.

Does Amy from Texas also realize that there already laws on the books preventing someone with a gun from being on school property? Maybe before we start passing more laws, we should first start enforcing the laws we already and maybe we'll see that there might not be a need for new ones. After all, if these "School Safe Zones" were enforced, there wouldn't be ANY school shootings.

We are talking about human lives here. There is nothing
more precious than life. If a million moms protesting can't
convince the government that stricter gun regulation is
required then I don't know what can!!

Voted.

As of today, my first name went from Son to Sonya for a vote haha :p

I changed my name to Mary, but didn't think of promoting AIMM. Guess I'll have to try and vote again. :D If it won't work with my e-mail, I'll have to use my wife's.

re- the Mom's comments, substitute the items i put in brackets. I wonder if she has thought of eliminating all the other things that are far more deadly to children, like cars. Does she cry every time she hears of a kid dying in a car crash?

"I am a teacher and a mom. For the last two years I have watched in horror every time a [airplane crash, car crash, bus crash] school shooting occurs, thinking, "That could be my school" or "That could be my kids". And I cry every time I see a news story about a child accidentally [drowning, poisoning, electrocuting] shooting themself or another child. My husband and I agree that as long as we have children in our home there will never be a gun [car, pool, electrical appliance, household chemical, medication]. I believe with tougher [car, plane, drug, pool] gun legislation it would not be necessary to
have a [whatever] gun in any home. I applaud your effort in what has become an increasing problem in our society."

Read the thread elsewhere here, on the NY Times series on rampage killers. Their crimes constitute the death of LESS than 1% of all murder victims. These moms are hysterical and irrationally phobic about something that statistically is as likely to happen to them or theirs as being struck by lightning or killed in a plane crash.
