Met one of "Them" at the range today

When the old jerk made the snide request, I would have just yelled out "HOT!" and continued shooting....at least for a little while longer. Then, when I was ready to take a break from shooting, simply would have looked at him and yelled "COLD".

That's how you teach an old jerk new tricks.

you were definitely right in what you did, I commend you keeping your cool.
I am 65 years young and still have things to learn, nope I do not know it all, lol. When someone sees me doing something in a wrong way I appreciate any advice or help they can give me and always thank them for it.

Don't know about your range but ours has a members guide/rule/safety book.New members are informed that they have to read and understand it.Blatant infraction of safety means maybe you'll learn better at your next club, because you're now longer a member here.

I would have yelled at him as soon as I saw him. "Hey idiot the range is still hot", or something like that.

Being old means I don't have to respect other old geezers.

I was perusing a 1998 or so copy of Guns &Ammo, it cited a case of a range that had too many grumps and curmudgeons who drove away newer and younger shooters, a new manager came in, promptly banished the rude and ill mannered, made them earn their way back. The one thing worse than a young jerk is an old one, an old jerk is a young jerk who was never taught any manners. The shooting sports can do without both.

I was at the 100 yard line of an unsupervised public range once when the guy three benches down opened fire on his target.
Me and the other couple of guys that were down range hit the deck and started hollering at the shooter who didn't seem to hear or care.
When confronted finally he said he saw us and wasn't shooting anywhere near us.
Everyone left but him.

The shooting range I belong to makes everyone that applies for membership take a test. When you apply, the rules of the range are provided, and the test is returned with the application for membership. Every two years you have to retake the test.
Evidently one time when the range was declared cold, a few shooters headed down range, and at the line one doofus chambered a round in his bolt action rifle. One of the shooters immediately confronted that guy and punched him in the nose.
Safety first! Egos be damned.

I like it.

I never have put much stock in subtleties.

Thankfully the outdoor ranges here are run by range officers. They run a tight ship at the ranges and you will know if you did something wrong. Then if you don't learn you will earn yourself a "don't come back". The only "do it yourself" areas are BLM land and you are usually by yourself.

I saw middle aged man once have to wrestle (twice) a rifle away from his aging dad who refused to put it down during a cease fire to replace targets. Dad claimed that he was a great shot and wouldn't - blah, blah.

Second time, Dad was put in the truck and driven away.
