mel gibsons stance on guns?

A lot of actors portray characters who have absolutely no relationship to their own beliefs. Would playing the part of a sadistic killer mean that you believe that such behavior is acceptable? Would playing the role of an anti-gun cop mean that you, too, are an anti?
I still would like to see or read some interview which would ease my apprehensions about Mel. Before this thread, I would've bet money that he was a staunch anti. Now, I'm not so sure.
