Mecklenburg County North Carolina

The permit system is clearly the descendant of racist laws originating in the 19th century and perpetuated through most of the 20th century. The permit system should have been scrapped in its entirety, but was at least converted to a "shall issue" system.

In Iredell County it took me seven days for the pistol permit to be issued. Tends to be easier on such things. It used to be even shorter with the older sherriff before Redmond got in since with him my father in law was a honourary deputy (of course that was the good old days).

The time you have to avoid is around election because the Sheriff department is too obsessed with photo ops.

I live in Mecklenburg. I have obtained pistol permits and CCH permits. With my pistol permits I have obtained. I have received some in a week and some 3 weeks. It took 4 months for me to receive my CCH but it only took my wife 3 months to get hers. Mecklenburg is not reliable when you are trying to plan on have a permit in advance.

I asked this question before, but never got a 'real' answer..

So, I assume at the gun shows... everyone is walking around with permits in their pockets?

I live in Rowan and way back when I got my first purchase permit I was interviewed when I went to pick it up. It seems someone who lived close to me had used my name, as well as a list of others, as an alias. As soon as the detective was assured he and I were not the same person I got my permit. After that it was no trouble, just the standard 5 day cool off period and go pick them up.

I now have a CCW, which took 90 days to the day, and do not have to get individual permission for each purchase. Also, I don't have to fill out the 4473. just show dealer my CHL, he writes my number down and the G-men all set back down.;)

Mech, I hate to disagree but in my understanding the 4473 is a federal form and is required by the ATF. If your dealer is selling you guns based solely on your NC CHL then they are breaking federal law. Neither the purchase permit nor the CHL gets you around filling the form out. They just don't have to call it in for the background check.

Perhaps you're right Rant'.
All I can do is tell you what happened. I recently purchased a rifle and started to fill out the form. I had my wallet in my hand and after starting the form I handed the dealer my CCW card and he took the form from me and said that's all he needed.

Wow. I've never had that happen. Maybe it's OK and my dealer(s) have just been sticklers. They never have to call it in once the form is done, but they still make me fill it out.

mechdrive.....me thinks the dealer violated the law. I thought licensed FFLs are even required to use the 4473 on used gun sales.

NC gun law was only recently changed to exempt CCH holders from the requirement of have a purchase permit. Ready for this? Logic broke out when someone questioned why require a permit to purchase from someone who had already been through a much more thorough background check.
