Maybe DHS didn't need all that ammo?

36 cents a round is not bad if you consider standard retail price on .40 S&W.

Wonder if it's any good and if it's functionally different from white box.

My god its purple.
Hey, if you handload, it's potentially a great way to ensure that you're not accidentally picking up someone else's "Glocked" .40 brass at the range. :D

IIRC it's supposed to be ballistically identical to whatever their duty load is. IOW it's probably loaded hotter than run-of-the-mill practice ammo.

This man approves.

I'm sure the DHS needs all their ammo. This is just a gimmick by the manufacturer to sell some otherwise hard to market surplus ammo at a good profit margin.

The fact that somebody thinks that LEOs in the US need to have their practice ammo colored purple to distinguish it from their duty ammo is discouraging, but probably correct.

You have to ask why in the world would a govt. agency order and pay for ammo in a certain color. Or did they color it themselves? Something smells fishy...

When I was in Federal LE we just used our duty ammunition... at the academy we used winchester ranger i think... def never saw any special purple boxes. But I only worked for 1 agency.

That wasn't the ammo contracted for in the DHS RFQ.

The ammunition contracted for by DHS was actual duty ammunition. You will note that the linked ammo is missing the jacketed hollow point specified.

This particular stuff is probably just Olin (the makers of the Winchester brand) cranking out some extra of the same spec ordered by whatever agency and selling it as "LEO training ammunition," whatever that is. They know that somebody's going to line up to buy it, even if it's not that great an idea.

If that RIP junk sells at high prices, unloading "special" ammo that's purple will be a walk in the park.

Full disclosure: The DHS bit was basically a sarcastic lead to the purple ammo link. I have know idea what they ordered, other than it was .40 and it irritated many people.

A lot was made of "large" ammo purchases by the government a while back. But the contract spread the purchases out over a 5 year period. It worked out to roughly 100 rounds/month for each agent for both practice and duty use. I don't think 100 rounds of practice a month is excessive.

I believe this is just a marketing gimmick... Not unlike the zombie ammo lol..
I wouldn't buy "training" ammo for regular ammo prices

I actually liked the hornaday zombie ammo, but it was just hornaday with a green plastic tip instead of red. I used it for hunting just fine
