Why would you be operating the safety? Either the gun is loaded because you are ready to shoot, or the action is open and the chamber is ready. Shotgun safeties are NOT drop proof or generally reliable in that regard.
 
Yes, seriously - if you trust a shotgun safety, you're the one making a mistake, possibly a fatal one.

Bells and whistles on a 500? Is that a tackycool thing?:D Seriously, a 500 does not have bells and whistles, it is about as basic a gun as you can get in a pump.
 
Who said anything about trusting the safety? I simply said the Mav is better cause you can reach it better. Trust it or not it's still there. By your logic may as well disassemble the gun and remove it.
 
While it is true that a safety can fail, which is why you cannot rely on it to be 100% infallible, you may wish to use a safety in some situations. All I am saying is that you don't want a tang safety in a pistol grip shotgun - unless you never use the safety in which case you can disable it.

Really? No kidding? A 500 is a basic gun? Wow, that's news! :rolleyes: I'm going to guess that anyone who has ever glanced at a 500 knows that it is a basic pump gun. I mean, in my 25 years as a casual FFL holder and selling at least a few score of the things, I don't think I've ever dealt with a customer who considered the 500 as anything but basic. However, when compared to the even more basic Maverick, it certainly does have more options available, which, of course, was my point. You know...options? Like the phrase 'bells and whistles' might imply? :D

Usually it's the Mossberg 500 safety that falls off.

I'm Remington 870 fan and have 2 of them + a chinese 870 copy.

I do have a broken 500 taking up space in my gun safe. One of these years I'll get around to fixing it.
