If the rifle "will chamber a 30/06", it is neither 7x57 or 8x57. A 30/06 is 7.62x63 and as such is much longer than either of the Mauser rounds. You need to find out EXACTLY what the chambering is before you fire the rifle. It may have been rechambered to 8mm06 or rebarrelled to 30/06. Many of the South American Mausers were originally 7.65 x53 (Argentine) and were later rechamber to accept 30/06 ammo(donated to the cause by the good old USA). Rechambering did not address the problem of bore diameter(.311) so these rifles are not usually as accurate as might be hoped. I had one that shot well with some tricky handloading but decided it would be better as a 338/06. Simply loading a .311 bullet in a 30/06 case results in a tight neck condition resulting is high pressure.
