mauser build thread

Nice work!

I like the idea of a 6.5-06 cartridge but don't think I'll ever get one. I have a .270 Win that I love too much, and really don't need another hand load only cartridge. I wish I had access to a machine shop that I could use, right now I'm limited to tinkering on Savage rifles without paying for Smith expenses.

Nice photography, must have been a professional!! Taylorce1 come on up and join the fun the more the merrier, Cheyenne is only 150 miles or so. The shop is always open and the coffee is on. I ordered cutters today, so maybe next week we can get a safety installed. I hope the machinery gnome's take the day off.

Stay tuned next week when Wyomingwhitetail installs a safety with nothing more than a fingernail file and 12lb sledge.

yea i was really lucky to meet Bob (RwBev) as this project probably would have never happened otherwise. I love machining and haven't been able to do any for 2 years so the opportunity to make some chips is awesome. Yes these photos were taken with the newest up to date photographic equipment by a paid professional and all staged after long sessions of getting the make-up right. All kidding aside this is turning into a great project thats teaching me alot and im starting to make some real progress. Stay tuned for more progress on this project and an upcoming .219 zipper marlin 336.

You'll love the 6.5-06, that cartridge is a sweetheart. Fast, flat, and typically very accurate. And different enough to give both the 25-06 and the 270 Win fans a headache!:D And keep the pics coming!

I can tell those are not professionally done pics. The model is kinda . . . well, you know . . . "plain" looking.;)

About 100 years ago I did this same project only using a brand new FN Mauser Supreme barreled action. I bought a Fajen semi-inletted stock and the wood grain was really beautiful. Unfortunately Reinhardt Fajen Company no longer exists. It was probably the best shooting rifle (.243) I've ever owned. Every shot ON a dime at 100 yards. And then I stupidly sold it. Duh.

I'm envious of your project!

If I ever did it I'd try to get a CZ barreled action. Probably be pretty expensive but it's ready to drop in.

I would love to and may take you up on the offer in the future. Though I have no experience operating anything other than a drill press. My abilities for running mills and lathes is severely lacking.

You are indeed fortunate to have him as a mentor. I've always wanted to build my own rifle but have never had access to the equipment or knowledge to do what I want. Looks like you're off to a great start with the project.

Thats alright, Taylorce1, Matt (Wyomingwhitetail) has more actual schooling than I do. I went to the school of "hard knocks" but so far its served me well. So bring your Savage rifles up and we can do some "tinkering".

all right ill try to get over there as soon as i can. I gotta do homework and have a test tomorrow so that blow tomorrow out of the water. need to play mechanic sometime too. Maybe this weekend if your around.

well worked on this some today. Got a pilot made drilling the hole for the safety and got the magazine opened up a little to accept the longer 6.5-06 cartridge. Broke one drill bit building the pilot but other than that not a whole lot of excitement. hopefully next time i can get the safety done and i still need to forge the bolt handle.

well didn't really accomplish much that would show up in pics. and im not done filing the magazine box out smooth so it still looks a little rough. Maybe later today ill take a pic of it any way and maybe one of the lug lapping set-up.

ok so i went on spring break was planning on doing some filing while i was home but that didn't happen so i haven't really accomplished much. I did finish lapping the lugs earlier today down to about 85-90 percent contact which i think is going to be good enough for this rifle. hopefully this week or weekend i can get some serious work done (safety install and bolt handle i hope). here is a pic of the shop built lag lapping setup. Nothing else this will dredge this thread up from the back pages so when i do get something done i won't have to search for it. Stay tuned for the next update

ok well got a little done today. got started on the new side swing style. Was going to do the whole thing but ran into a little snafu with the cutting arbor. I also cut the bolt handle off so i can re-contour it and knurl it then weld it back on.

Man did you ever have one of those day's??!!! Matt came over to get some work done on his Mauser and it seemed that everything I touched went to Heck. Had a sanding belt break and almost rip off my thumb, tried to harden a frizzen while Matt was busy and couldn't get it to harden, put the saw in the mill to cut a slot in Matt's shroud and it wobbled like a kids toy and probably some other stuff that I blocked out of my mind. If it wasn't for Matt I don't think we would have accomplished anything. Here lately I think I should hire a Priest and have my shop exercised!! Oh well there is always tomorrow....I hope

Bob

I'd probably never tackle a project like this... but it is very nice to see this thread and be able to enjoy reading and watching the process. :)
