Mauser 98 cleaning rod Removal

A friend and I were looking over his new 98 Mauser (1940 vintage) yesterday and were stumped on how
to remove the ramrod. Normally w're like an octopus encountering a peanut butter jar containing
a tasty shrimp inside and eventually figure out how to open it, but this one left us scratching our heads.

- Friction fit (and just real tight)?
- Screwed-in fit ?
- Spring-loaded release mechanism (that we couldn't immediately find)

Any experience out there?

screwed in.

It's threaded into a little block, you may have to remove the stock, squirt some "Break Free" (or equivalent) on it and let it sit for a few hours.
After that stick a screwdriver in the slot and gently twist to remove. ( if it starts to distort, STOP!) spray it again , but soak it longer.

its probably rusted in. get some good penetrating oil and squirt it in the hole and CAREFULLY unscrew it. its just threaded in.
