Massive weapons cache seized in raids

This surprises the heck out of me. I served alongside Aussies during Viet Nam and they were the most fiercely independent and strongly united people I've ever met. They also would rather fight than drink or have sex (almost :D ), and other than the S. Koreans, Charlie feared them the most. There's got to be more to the story, and I'm waiting for our Down Under TFL brothers to fill us in. Blue Heeler, guys, you there?

"This is a massive amount of weaponry which no longer presents a threat to the Australian community," Customs NSW director David Collins said in a statement.

"These weapons have the potential to cause serious harm in the community."
Sayeth the Jubilant Customs Officer.

Sounds like intense boredom in the Australian customs department is the rule, if they can get excited enough over this "find" to make those foolish statements. Possibly coupled with David Collins bucking for a promotion..... :D

Hey USP45usp, we are finally in agreement. As nuts as I find some members here that I think *might* be over the top, I am absolutely certain that the Australian government has lost its mind. Wake up down under. People generally get the government (and its consequences) that they deserve.

By the way, no one has pointed out that all of these insanely dangerous weapons originated in China. China is supposedly a harsh oppressive government. And its somewhat true. The very possesion of a gun will get you a minimum of 6 months in hard labor at one of their famously glamorous prisons. And yet, the iron fisted Chinese have no problem with the manufacture and sale of these very same items inside their own rigidly controlled country. Makes you wonder who the totalitarian regime is, don't it?

Gee, I'm SURE those crossbows really were 'concealed' in that there crate of novelty items... C'mon! I see all sorts of catalogs of novelty stuff that sell butterfly knives, crossbows, and grappling hooks all the time. They also sell rubber ducks, alarm clocks, and hi-tech chairs.

I doubt it was concealed; more than likely they were listed items of cargo, considered 'novelties' by the folks who sell them as novelties in the US.

And the flashlights... :barf:

That looks like the contents of my junk drawer down in my garage. Hmm...I think the blissaussies would have a collective cow if they saw what I'm looking at in my home office right now.

7 swords
1 scimitar
assorted firearms (all unloaded and visually inspected ;) )
Several flashlights

Other assorted implements of possible destruction.

Oh...and I have an Almond Joy candy bar too.

What can I say? This is the sort of media and government orgy over "weapons" we live with every day down here. The country is run by do-good, anti-gun blissninnies, who are among the most vindictive, spiteful and single-minded hatefilled people I've ever come across.

Their ultimate aim is NO self-defence whatsoever; hence, we should have NO "weapons" whatsoever, because we don't "need" them.

Knives aren't illegal; carrying them, generally, is. Double-edged daggers are, generally, banned. Police can stop you and search you if they "think" you'e carrying a knife or other "weapon". In some states, you need to have a metal safe to store swords in -- if you have a government-approved reason to own one. Crossbows are either banned outright or heavily regulated/controlled/restricted. Martial arts weapons are either restricted or private ownership banned outright. Slingshots are banned in some states; but their use is heavily proscribed. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Self-defence is excluded by law as a reason for owning any type of weapon.

This is worth repeating, too: There is NO political party in Australia (apart from one single politician comprising the Shooters Party) which is pro-gun or even neutral; they are ALL anti-gun! We can't "vote them out" because there's literally no-one else to "vote in".

As far as gun ownership and shooting goes, my country is screwed, blued and tattooed -- or maybe it's reamed, bored and countersunk.

Whatever, the fact remains we will NEVER go back to the (very) relative "freedom" we had when I was younger -- it will only ever get worse from now on.

Take heed.

sounds to me like they just 'shut down' the most dangerous flea market booth of all time.

What a bunch of maroons....

500 illegal knives discovered

October 05, 2005

MORE than 500 illegal weapons had been discovered in Western Australia in the past month, Customs said today.

Officers at the Fremantle Container Examination Facility found a large quantity of weapons which had been imported from China on September 14, Customs WA regional director Paul O'Connor said.

He said the cache included 168 trench knives, 12 daggers and 110 knives with concealed blades.

After further investigation, Customs staff searched two premises in Perth on September 23 and seized another four trench knives, 161 knives with concealed blades, one dagger, one push knife and a finger claw.

Customs officers searched a premises in Bunbury the same day where they found replica firearms and knives.

Mr O'Connor said the search followed the detection at the Melbourne International Mail Centre of three firearm magazines (I think they mean firearms magazines, not reading material; at least I hope so), which had been sent from the US on September 3.

In the third case, Customs officers found 71 push knives and 20 ornamental scabbards, each containing two concealed blades, in 43 cartons of assorted novelty goods imported from China in a container on September 5.

A search of a Geraldton property on September 29 resulted in the seizure of documents allegedly relating to the importation.

Mr O'Connor said all the items were restricted imports under Customs regulations.

"These detections demonstrate the effectiveness of our screening procedures at the border," he said in a statement.

"All of these items had the potential to cause serious personal injury."

A Customs spokeswoman could not say if anyone had been charged in relation to the seizures but investigations were continuing.

I doubt the "magazines" are anything other than some poor old bloody licensed firearms owner who was unaware that a magazine is classed as a firearm "part" and requires police/Customs clearance before it can be imported.

I wonder what would have happened to poor old Fred Sanford with his 2x4 soaking in motor oil behind the door, had he lived in Australia? They probably would have executed him at dawn with a slingshot firing squad.
