Marlin XL7 or X7 Stainless questions

Let us know what you think. But make sure it says 783 on the barrel. :D

And show us pics of your other new toys too...

I was at the local FFL's shop over the weekend. That funky OD green Remington was no longer around, and he had sold his other two 783s.

I don't know....

I don't post a lot, but I have an XL7 in 25-06 Rem. It is a tack driver. I put in a Boyds Classic Brown laminated stock. It fit right in and is pillar bedded. I am debating selling the XL7, cause I also have that cal in a Wheatherby Vanguard S2. I just don't need two guns in the same cal.

I have had no trouble with the XL7, except as I was cleaning the bolt face with a plastic bristle brush, the extractor on the bolt face flew off into never, never land. I called remlin, and was told by the CS lady, that the XL7 had been discontinued, they also told me they had no more parts, except stocks. she gave me a couple phone numbers of parts places that might have the parts. I was able to round up another extractor, ball detent, and spring. So now I can shoot the XL7 again. This was a month ago. I have a Redfield 3X9- 50 scope on it, and as I said it is 3/4 in @100 yrds, with factory , and hand load ammo.

I think it is a shame that the XL7 is discontinued, it is a fine rifle. But Remlin has done that with a lot of the old Marlin line.

Dave if you lose or break that extractor in the future you can file a Savage extractor down to work. Added benefit is that the Savage extractors aren't MIM.

I do - the 783 is not a rifle with a polymer lined action. I have one. I have disassembled it. I have cleaned it. I have shot it. Lather, rinse, repeat. :D

The 783 comes in a black stock or Mossy Oak Infinity stock. Not sure about the 770 because I've never paid much attention.

Repeat after me: The 783 is all metal except for the stock...:)

Seriously, it's a Remington copy of the Savage Axis, only the bolt is not at the extreme rear and the Remington has a shroud. Other than that, they are VERY similar. I own an Axis as well, so I can compare. :)

What caliber would you get if you get the XPR: .270, 30-06, 300win, or 338win?

I'd hope they come out with a short action as well.

i am in ne ohio in youngstown i have never seen any of the budget marlins.budget rifles around here are axis and ruger american as well as a 770.i have seen and touched the 783 out of all the rifles mentined the 783 feels and looks best to me, and i am a savage guy. considering getting a 783 in a 308

300 Win Mag likely. I see they are in 26" on the XPR.
That XPR looks nice, as much as everyone is bashing on it. More like a Tikka T3 with a barrel nut than any of the other budget guns. I wonder if they'll offer wood and laminate stocks in the future.

Personally, I would have loved to see a $550-$600 Model 70 with a matte finish and cheap plastic stock rather than creating a new platform. USRAC used to do it even cheaper and Remington still is with the 700ADL.
