Marlin or Henry, 44 Mag or 357 Mag?

I only purchase pistol caliber carbines with Duplex receivers. Nothing else can handle the extreme pressures of the 57 Mag and 44 Mag :)

The all steel Henry's sure look good to me.

My first choice would be the Marlin in .44 or .357 for your purpose. Second choice would be the Henry Big Boy Steel.

Either way you go, people are going to have a hard time wiping the smile off your face.

KnappJU: My Son and I have had both Marlin Lever Guns in 44 Mag & 357 Mag, for several years now. Both are just really great shooting Guns. And we shoot both them both quite a bit and reload for both of them also. I don`t really have much experience with the Henry Rifles. But IMHO if I could just buy one, my choice hands down, would be the Marlin Lever Rifle, in 44 mag. Again IMHO the 357 Mag is a great cartridge but the 44 Mag is better and will do alot more than the 357 can do. A good Marlin Lever Action Rifle should out last Your Grand Kids.

One carbine for hunting deer I'd pick the Marlin 1894 in Stainless steel... The 1894SS. If you are limited to $750, you might get lucky with a used purchase of one. I see one on gunbroker at $805.

Had the chance to handle a Rossi in .357 this past weekend at a "Field and Stream" store in Altoona, PA (owned by Dick's Sporting Goods).

I was not impressed. Action didn't feel any better or worse than a new Marlin, metal work looked maybe average, but the metal to wood fit was horrid. I can't see how a factory would let a product out of their plant with workmanship so visibly poor.

Henry has the best customer service there is. You can call there and talk directly to the owner of the company

Having both a Henry in .357 and a Marlin in .357, well, no problems with either one.

I guess which one I would buy would be more of a function of what I wanted it for. The Henry is almost too pretty to take out hunting; but is more of a showpiece when it goes to the range. I will cry when I do end up scratching it.

Thanks for all the input guys was a lot of help on making my decision. I ended up going with a Henry Big Boy Steel in 44 Mag. Decided to go with the Steel cause the traditional Big Boy looks to pretty to go out into the woods and the Steel is a little cheaper and lighter. Went with Henry over Marlin because the outstanding reviews I have seen on Henry and how they stand by the product. I just get the imprecision that Henry is a better rifle. Went with the 44 Mag of 357 Mag, seemed like the general consensus was it was a better caliber for Deer Hunting. Thanks again for all the info and input guys.

You won't regret the Henry. I've got the Golden Boy 44mag and yes it is a "pretty" rifle. But I don't have any gun for show lol. Hope you reload for .44mag, if not, consider it. These rifles perform really well with a 240gr jacketed bullet. Enjoy.

I've shot the Marlin 44 and own the Henry 44 in brass. It's a lever gun rack it like you mean it.

For the answer to the optic mount for the henry, they make a cantilever mount for the brass receiver that I have on mine, nice quality piece.

Been reloading 44 for close to 40 years now, mine likes em on the warmer side.
