Marlin 30A, yes or no?

I found a used Marlin 30A on Texas Gun Trader (like craigslist for guns) that comes with a 3-9x40 Nikon Buckmaster scope. The seller is asking $385 for it, but I could probably talk him down a little bit. My main concerns are: Is this as good as a 336, because I know that the 30A's are Glenfields. Secondly, what is a decent price for this gun? Just from the one picture in the listing the gun looks to be in pretty good shape. I would go to Cabela's and buy a new Marlin 336, but I'm wary of the quality of the new "Remlins". Thanks!
 
The 30A is the same gun just cheaper wood I believe. The price doesn't sound so bad but like everything else if I think there's room to be talked down more I will try.
 
I went on Gunbroker.com just to check prices and the two that I saw were fetching $330. This gun will be used for hunting so as long as this gun has the Marlin quality and reliability, I will be satisfied.
 
If the rifle were manufactured within the last three years I would pass, the last Marlin I purchased for my grandson was within this time frame and I wished I had gone another direction.. William
 
The 30A's haven/t been made in a while, it was replaced by the 336W and 336A as Marlins budget guns. I'd guess this is a 1970's or 80's gun. It is the same gun as a 336 of the same era. They use cheaper wood and at times cheaper sights on them. It probably has only 1 barrel band at the end of the barrel and an end cap on the forend.

You can often find 336C's used for the same price and given the option between a 30A or 336C at near the same price I'd take the 336C every time. Of course the scope is worth something. I think that is probably a fair price, especially if you like the scope. Not a steal.
 
For 385 I certainly hope you can get the price down. A ( JM ) barrel engraved one maybe >I'd consider. ~~~Maybe.
Stocks cheapy looking'ness has always been the draw back on that marlin model although the older models did have a good receiver action.
 
I would try to get the price down to 325.00. I have a 30A and it is the same as a 336 with birch stock/Marshield as opposed to Walnut on the 336. I bought it to hunt with due to my Winchester 94 having such a beautiful Walnut stock. I generally don't have 'Safe queens' but have to admit that with my Winchester and my M1A having such nice wood I shoot them at the range and walk logging roads with them but don't drag them into the bush.
 
Daughter has one ..... it's a 336 with cheaper wood stocks.

The only issue we ever had with it was the rear sight got loose one year on a hunt ...... there's an XS Scout Mount and Burris pistol scope on it now. Excellent hunting rifle, within it's range limits.
