Marlin 1894 Peep Sights

I've gotten a lot of great feedback and advice with this post. I want to say thank you. I want to ask an additional question without starting a new post.

Of those of you who choose peep sights over post and groove style sights, do you use a bead front, fire sight or a partridge? I really like the williams sight so far but the glare off the bed is torublesome. I may also consider painting the front sight tip to dull the glare. I am seriously considering a partrige style sight but after some research I see there are black or brass versions to complicate choices. Thanks for sharing your ideas. rc

Mine has the gold bead and I would like to replace it with a simple square post. On the list but it is a long list.

.

YMMV on front sights, as everybody has different vision and/or shooting requirements.

I've used FO beads ever since they were first introduced, many years ago - but I almost never target shoot/plink, except to check zero, and usually hunt in dark/dank buck bedrooms (aka: black cedar swamps). so the FO sights are a must for ME.

What you CAN do is to order a plain brass Patridge front sight blade from Skinner Sights ($15, and they will make you the correct height), then color the sight flat/matte black, except for a small square near the top/rear face of the sight blade.
That way, you can always change the sight color to your druthers, even applying a dollop of orange sight paint on the tip, or filing it thinner, etc, etc, etc.

I found that the fiber optic front sights are too fat for anything more than 100 yards. They cover too much of the target. The smaller Lyman front sights, although not fiber optic, have a little ivory-colored insert that shows up against dark backgrounds.

Shieffield shooter. That looks like a plain squre post from the pictures. What make of post is that? How fat is the post?

That is simply the factory front sight that came on the little rifle in about 1980 (can't really remember the year I bought the rifle but it was purchased from a Woolco if that tells ya anything :D ). It has a brass bead on a small dovetailed in base.

IMHO, You're using the wrong size fiber-optic front sight ( for YOU ) .........

FO sights are just like Lyman, Williams, & Marbles bead front sights, in that they are ALL available in either small sized ( 1/16") beads, or larger-sized (3/32") beads - in addition to different colors (red, green, yellow, etc) for various folk's vision requirements.

However, An FO user does have to shop around, between the various FO makers ( Williams FireSight, Tru-Glo, Hi-Viz, T/C, etc ) to get what they want/need.

Additionally, FO front sight blades, besides being available in a variety of heights, are also available with different sight blade base widths - 3/8" to fit in a ramp, and wider for installation directly in a barrel dovetail.

Is anyone using a globe front sight with rear peep? how about a globe with an open notch rear? I do find the "SKS" sight picture very useable. I like the idea of interchangeable inserts but I'm not sure if they will clutter the sight picture too much for game. Any thoughts?

rc, I purchased a Lyman globe sight for my 1894CL, but I have not installed it - I thought it would look a bit odd on the 1894. I did use a Williams Firesight bead on the front, so far I like it, but I do have a standard gold bead as a backup.

It looks like I have a few options in addition to the standard gold bead like the Asheley with white stripe, out of production Millets with orange or white stripe, Partridge type from Skinner in brass or black, a fire sight or a globe style front sight.

What height and width does skinner suggest for barrel mounted sights on the 32-20 classic from the early 90s that is a round barrel gun? What sight would be good for my 357 limited wich has a ramp out front if I buy the skinner rear to go on it?

You don't even have to think aboutit, since Andy ( @ Skinner) will supply you what you need, if you give him the info.

FWIW, besides correct height, ramp mounted sights & sights mounted directly in a bbl dovetail need to have different base widths - the ramp sight narrower so as not to overhang the ramp; the bbl sight wide to fill the bbl dovetail slot.
