Marine Magnum or 870 Police?

You know I used to be kind of leary of plastic parts on anything mechanical, especially guns and cars but I have seen both plastic parts on cars and guns take abuse that render the metal item either disfigured or disfunctional.

I have steel frame guns, I have polymer frame guns and to be honest they are both tough as hell.

I guess after that speech my trigger housing will break tomorrow. I made a comment about me never having a SIG malfunction on me in a another post. So basically with Mr. Murphy the way he is, I am setting myself up for a rough range session.

I eyed plastic parts with a jaundiced eye, but realized there really weren't any breakages being reported.

Sounds like you have a great SO as well as a shotgun. Treat her like a queen!!

To me the difference is pretty much cosmetic.

I like my guns black so I prefer the PM. But it'd be nice to have both!

There's a sidesaddle carrier that holds 4 that works well with the standard Remington forearm. Tac-Star makes 'em.

For the benefits of its finish and as a thing of beauty, the MM is hard to resist. Anyway, I sure do like mine.

But overall I lean toward the PM for its traditional looks, metal trigger housing, and no lock.

Thanks .....

..... For all your replies.

I just checked out a MM at my favorite gun shop, and as far as I can tell, it is identical to the 870 Express except for the foreend, extended magazine, and of course the finish.

The 870 Police weapons on the other hand, have the Parkerized finish (they are available blue also), very nice WALNUT stocks (again, available with synthetic), steel trigger guard, and most importantly (to me anyway), no cheesy PC lock.

Looks like I'm going to be getting the Police model (#4903) as soon as my dealer can get one in.

Thanks again for all the replies .....

Integral Locking Mechanisms

Ok, a question to the masses.

Why does everybody get so hot and bothered by and integral locking mechanism. Yes it is PC and I am firmly entrenched in the use the safety behind your ears camp but it doesn't interfere in anyway with my shooting. I just leave it off.

Personally I like the idea of having it there in the unlikely event that I may want to use it. I mean at home I have various storage methods to deter crime and stupid people but if I should happen to be at my parents home and need to leave the gun unattended I could see the benefit of having a nice compact locking device built into the gun.

I hate the idea of smart gun technology as there are way too many chances of a malfunction but a completely optional locking device doesn't bother me one bit.

Just a thought.

By the way I took my MM to the range yesterday and it is about the sweetest shooting 12 gauge with the mildest recoil I have ever felt.

I haven't done much 12 gauge shooting in quite few years and can remember a few wooden stocked SGs kicking like mules if you didn't pocket them just right. My MM is very forgiving heck compared to my 8mm Mauser with steel buttplate it is a downright pussycat.

PC Safeties - It's a matter of principle .....

..... At least for me.

I am on the same page as you cslinger when it comes to firearm (or any other) type of safety - the best safety device is the one between your ears.

However, I do not like the idea of Remington - or many of the other manufactures - that succumb to political rhetoric - and hence we are forced to have something we never asked for - PC Safeties.

But back to my original inquiry regarding the MM or the Police models ..... I'm going with the Police model for a multitude of reasons, one of them being the lack of a PC safety.

Thanks again for all who responded .....

What year did they start putting that key safety on the 870 MM ? I have one on my want/gotta have list but I want one without that key safety if possible.

Cslinger, besides any questions of choice, utility and PC-ness, the keyed safety CAN be manipulated to on,not requiring the key. Bad idea on a sporting shotgun, VERY bad on a "Serious" piece.

It wouldn't bother quite so much but for the fact there's no choice.

Can a civilian purchase a new 870 Police or is it LE only? Are you non LE guys buying them used from online auctions?

Where is a good place to buy a 870 Police?

What is a good price for a 870 Police?

PMs are available to the general public...I got mine for $325 on AuctionArms, NIB. But I think that any gunshop will order one for you...

That is a good Question... when did REM started putting locks on their guns... and when did they start using plastic parts?! I bought my 870MM back in '98.. or '97, all metal, no lock! :D

Nahh.
You buy one cause you want one.
"PC" pressure ain't got nothing on sales reports.
The facts is that folks buy 'em without, they buy 'em with.
By the truck.
Who's at fault?
The way Remington sees it, it's simply a matter of whether or not they're open to attack by the libs.
