Man Eaters of Tsavo: What gun for Simba defense?

If I'm out & about my daily business, I think I'd lean towards a .444 lever action. Light, quick, handy at close range, and packs a good wallop. And, I'd want some good night vision equipment (not an option when that took place). I'm thinking more self defense where I'm the hunted one, stalked by a predator who has every natural advantage & is going to give little warning (if any).

For hunting, how about a McMillan .50? If I'm hunting this kind of killer, I don't want to mess around.

Either that or a gatling gun (or a Lewis) mounted in the back of a Land Rover...

Writing this reminded me of something - I met an African from Kenya once at a party. He told me there were two theories on what to do if you encounter a lion in the bush: run, or stand still. Problem was, if you run, the lion might think you're food, and you can't outrun a lion. If you stand, the lion might think you're a threat, and you're done for. You just have to guess which will work & hope you're right.

John Taylor's nickname, Pondoro, means lion.
Late in his life, he wrote that he had fired 5000 .375H&H cartridges at game in Africa and felt the caliber was far more effective than its paper ballistics would suggest. I spoke with my PH on this subject 9 yrs ago and was told that in his opinion, the .375 was the best walking around caliber for Africa. Three dozen animals later, I agree. The .470 is splendid. I've taken two buff with it, but it ain't an all day strolling thru the bush gun. Thirteen pounds is a lot to wander around with. I'll take a 9.5lb, 22"bbl controlled-feed .375.

Not soon Otter. But yes you can go :D

I think we will get to Alaska before Africa though ;)

Aye, and I'll be wi' ya, lad.

If I were looking for lion on the plains, where I could expect a longer shot (over 100 yards), I would be content with a .35 Whelen, or 9.3x62, x64, or x74mm. (9.3x64mm being usually loaded most powerfully of the three, but any one'll do.)
