Man buys a ring, Woman has to buy an AR

A friend of mine recently got engaged. She got a nice new diamond ring out of the deal. Now she wants to get her fiance a nice new AR and surprise him with it as an engagement gift. Long story short she is awesome.

Here's where I come in: She knows nothing about guns and I know more about them than anyone else she knows. As a long time lurker here and first time poster I have come to appreciate the knowledge many of you have. So rather than spend several hours looking up what the best AR-15 in her budget is I figured I would come to the experts. I will admit that I have yet to utilize the search function on this site but new AR's come out everyday so I thought a fresh thread would be appropriate.

Here are the things we are looking for:
-Useful for home defense
-Can make for a fun day at the range shooting out to around 200 yards.
-Prefer a flat top M-4 style variant.
-Needs iron sights for starters, he can add other sight options later.

The Budget: $1500 or less

I hope that gives you guys something to work with in narrowing down the field. Also if you have any good suggestions on where to shop for said AR-15 in the Houston, TX area that would be appreciated as well.

-Austin

A Colt of any flavor would be a fine choice. You aren't going to do any better in that price ballpark. Talk to member Wildalaska of Wild West Guns for crazy Colt deals.

How much is a Colt 6920?

Somewhere around $1,100-$1,200.

He'll have an excellent AR and she'll have money left over for magazines and ammo and whatnot.:)

In the sub kilobuck and a half price range for a complete rifle, I'd recommend the Colt 6920, a half dozen Pmags, and a case of ammo.

While there's others that will be just as good, the Colt will retain value, run great, and be a good out of the box solution (without having to run down separate halves like a BCM upper and lower).

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think her fiance would like something with a flat top upper and rails. I edited my post above to reflect this as well.

brand names: colt. bushmaster, dpms, rock river arms, olympic arms

presonal choice: rock river arms mid-length A4 with a 6 position car stock

The 6920 IS a flat top. You can add rails to any rifle, and unless she knows exactly what his preferences are for his intended shooting, it's best if she get him a standard "starter kit" so he doesn't feel any pressure to keep accessories on his rifle that may not suit him or whatever type of shooting he'll be doing.

The idea of a Colt 6920, half a dozen P-Mags and a case of ammo is a SOLID one.

Let him dress up his rifle the way he wants.

FWIW, When I got engaged, I got an engagement rifle as well. Some women are AWESOME!!!

Go Colt, 16" barrel. That's give him plenty of money for mags, ammo, accessories, and of course, taking her out to dinner in thanks for the gun.

I would say any Spikes Tactical rifle. Great fit and finish and they run around$800. It would leave her with plenty of money for ammo and mags.

I would also consider BCM. Good stuff there, too.

Colt LE 6920---about $1200.
Ten AR15 magazines from Brownell's, MilSpec w/ CAGE code--about $110
Case of XM193 5.56 ammunition--heck, I'm not sure, but I believe that Graf and Sons has a smoking deal on 1000 rounds right now.

OR, to be the new kid on the block:

Four 30 round mags from Brownells, and:

ONE 60 round Surefire magazine...

You'll be sitting in tall cotton.;)

DD's are listed for 1500, but that pushes you OTD to arond 16-1700. Might be worth it as first and last buy

She can get this with everything the guy wants and more. Already has the flip up front sight, you get to choose any rear sight you want, has the railed handguard, chromed BCG....

She will still have $400 or so to buy optics or ammo or both...

Here is mine.

I went through this last year. Same budget (not the same situation).

Colt 6920 was my choice, and your friend's fiance will be thrilled. They don't make them any better, IMHO - unless you go the super customized route, which is a whole 'nother ballgame.

For that price range, you can have your pick of any of the top tier brands (Colt, BCM, Noveske, Daniel Defense, LMT).

Out of those, I'd recommend the the Colt LE6920 (also called the Law Enforcement Carbine). I purchased one earlier this year as my first AR, and I have been 100% satisfied.

The LE6920 meets the OP's requirements, and it truly is a excellent gun. Yes, you could save money and buy a Stag, Bushmaster, DPMS, or Olympic, but it would be penny wise, but pound foolish.

Go with the Colt (or any other top-tier brand) and don't look back. Your buddy (and his fiancee) will thank you.
