Making a Tactical Mossberg 835

i will probably go with the choate, but what's this about them shorting the package of the barrell clamp? at midwayusa, in the reviews, one user stated he got shorted and choate claimed that they don't include one in the package due to the extension/barrel being to far apart? midway changed their add to reflect no clamp, yet it's pretty clear in the above photos a clamp will indeed fit, and i will definitely want a clamp.

I've just picked up a maverick 91 with a 22" 835 rifled deer barrel. i put my collapsible stock off my 500 on it (the 500 is going back to wood), and am thinking of the Choate mag extension. will the +3 fit OK? this will be my duty shotgun, so the more the merrier.

also, no one else makes a mag extension for the 835/91? the offerings for Remington/Winchester won't fit? all the threads look the same.

thanks ahead of time..and yes, i know the thread is old. but since it asks the right question, lol.....

The Choate 835 +2 tube extension will be much shorter with a 22" barrel and the +3 will be 5/8" longer than the muzzle. The overall length of the 835 +3 Choate extension is 8 3/8" . Measure from the top of the barrel ring to the muzzle on your shotgun.

Umm... 'scuse me, but...

Note: Mossberg 835™ and Maverick® 91 barrels are chambered for 2-3/4”, 3” and 3-1/2” shells. Barrels will interchange. OFM 835 and Maverick® 91 accu-mag barrels are overbored – not for use with slugs. For slugs, select a barrel that is designed for slug use. - http://www.havlinsales.com/closeout.htm

IMHO it isn't much of a "tactical" shotgun if you can't shoot slugs through it, and so far I haven't seen anyone mention the troublesome little detail that Mossberg specifically warns against using slugs in overbored barrels, like that on the 835.

Am I out of line here?

Tactical usually equates to HD/SD and there is little need for a slug in either... If 00 is not providing the needed range you are just "people huntin"... I personally wouldn't own a shotgun incapable of shooting slugs if it were my only one but it could be my primary HD/SD gun if I have my trusty 500 and Mav 88 as well...

so choate is the only offering? or is choate just the best?

Choate is lower cost.

I also offer one for the 590A1 18.5" BBL, 500 Breacher and the 835 all take the same tube extension. I can custom fit one of mine to your barrel so it is flush with the muzzle. The picture mic214 posted at the first of the thread is one of my tube extensions.

I agree it would not be my first choice but some like the thought of having a shotgun with the capability of being able to shoot 3.5" shell. It can be used for hunting too.

well seeing how my barrel is a rifled one, i'd say i'm fine shooting slugs. also, i prefer slugs over buck as i have to account for only one projectile vs 9 or 13 or15 or 17 or however you have in your particular loading. and with today's newer slugs, overpentration isn't as much of a concern as in days gone by. but this is strictly my opinion, hopefully i will never have to test it out.

max100...what is pricing shipped to 62906 on one of yours? and will it include a clamp?

Lee,

Standard 835/91/935 accu mag barrels are overbored and not slug friendly. There are dedicated slug barrels, both rifled and smoothbore, for these guns that are of standard 12 ga bore dimensions though.

Seems as if the OP has one of those, rifled.

Personally I'd be looking to swap it out for a smoothbore slug barrel to avoid the spinning shot column issue with buckshot, but that's me......

it that was directed at me, no worries as i won't shoot much buck through it. the rifled slug barrel is perfect as loading all slugs is my preferance anyway.

I have done the same thing in turning a 835 into a house gun.

as for the slug issue, its really a personal choice. me personally a 3" 00 buck shot round used in the typical home situation is more than enough, you never going to really be more than 20' away from what your shooting at. so at 20 feet there isnt going to be much seperation of the pellets.

the problem I am having is finding a decent forend for that I can attach a light to.

Nice

Good work on that 835. Love the stumpy barrel. Being a fan of the 10 gauge for HD, a 3.5 inch 12 could fill the bill nicely instead. That would make the manual of arms the same for all as there is a Mossy 500 hangin around. Hmmmm
