Making a Tactical Mossberg 835

I bought a used Mossberg 835 awhile back and was thinking of making it into "house" gun of sorts. It has a parkerized finish, wood furniture, a ported barrel, and speaking of barrels, this one seems shorter than most other shotguns I have. I'm assuming it may be a Turkey Gun or something along those lines?

I'm going to start looking around the net for the things I want to add, mag tube extension, different stock set, ghost ring sights, etc.. I have looked around some but most places have stuff for the 870 Remington, 590 Mossberg, or 1200 Winchester.

Does anyone here have any experience with the 835 in this area or should I sell the thing and just buy one of those Mossberg 590 Special Purpose models?

As long as you're happy with the barrel length, stick with what's PAID for!!

90+ percent of the accesories that will fit on the Model 500 will fit on the 835, stocks and forearms will be the same, the 835's action bars are 1/2" longer, so those have to stay.

The 835 also has a slight advantage over the 500 in that it's a little bit heavier (that will help with recoil).

Don't spend money just to spend money, get a bunch of ammo and practice until you know where the shots will hit before you pull the trigger, after it becomes 2nd nature, then think about adding accesories..

The only accessory I recommend is a good light, everything else is extra and can actually throw off the balance of the gun...

I have a basic M-835 with a 26" barrel that I use for duck & goose hunting. I also want to use it for HD, so I am going to outfit it with a few accessories for that purpose.

I was able to score a factory 18.5", 835 barrel with a 3-1/2" chamber for it from a seller on GunBroker for $80.00. These are not listed anywhere on Mossberg's website, but I guess they did make them at one time. The barrel is brand new, but the packaging seems old, so I don't know how long this had been sitting around the seller's shop. The barrel is actually a straight cylinder bore (No removable choke tube). The finish is blued and not matte blue like the standard M-835.

My plan is to add a mag extension, sling, heat shield, "Cruiser" style forend, side saddle and possibly a set of ghost ring sights as time and money will allow. I will post pics as I go.

This is the "Before" pic:

And this is how she looks with the new barrel installed:

When I swapped out the barrels, I also removed the magazine plug, so now she will handle (5+1) 2-3/4" or 3" shells or (4+1) 3-1/2" shells.......

EDITED to add:

Some more pics of my 835 HD project. I added a web sling to it and I just got the pistol grip on yesterday.....this should be fun to shoot with 3-1/2" magnum buckshot.....NOT!!!!!

It should be fun to play with this configuration at the range.........

I ordered a new forend with web strap from Mossberg that should be here any day now.....

For what it's worth, in order of MY preference:
picture #2 (18.5") followed by
picture # 1 (with the 26 ")

Sorry, but my opinion is
after that its all downhill.
However, please do enjoy it
as that is THE AMERICAN WAY.

I like my camo'd 24 inch barrel,
but would prefer a shorter camo'd barrel.

I gotta admit My vote goes as the previous poster.
My 500 was bought as a "cruiser" and I had a "AR" style rear stock from Coate. I swapped back and forth a few times and when it was stolen in a burglary it had the pistol grip. I got it back 11 years later and had the pistol grip on it and "had fun" "shootin' stuff"... Even when i split my lip :o But since my auto wreck in sept it has had the same black poly full stock in the first pics and won't likely ever go back. Mine is just a 20 gauge and never has a 3 inch round been in it... Have fun with them 3 1/2 mags in it...;)

I just got the magazine extension for my 835 HD project and installed it today, so now she will handle (6+1) 2-3/4" or 3" shells or (5+1) 3-1/2" shells. The extension is made by "Craig" at the "Gun Connection". His email address is: GunConnect@prtcnet.com

The extension runs $65.00 and that includes the extended magazine spring. He also threw in an orange "Hi-Viz" follower to boot!

It is a one piece extension and very well made:

This is my 835 in "Resident Evil/Terminator" mode:

This is how I will be keeping the 835 set up most of the time with the full rear stock:

Here's looking at YOU!:

Not meaning to threadjack, but I am having one hell of a time finding a magazine tube extension for my Mossberg 535. Will a mag extension for a Mossberg 500 or 835 fit my 535?

The mag extension is the only real modification I want to make to my 535.

JUST LEAVE IT

you can shoot fine with it.

Or buy an 870 like you should have ;)

I have various pistol grips, folding stocks and barrels for my 870. And the best house gun set up (IMHO) is a standard stock w/18.5 barrel and 2 round mag extension. It points easy, isn't to long and unlike pistol grip/folding it feels natural.

Your 535 has a mag tube like the standard model 500 that will not accept extensions. The only model 500 that will take an extension is the "Tactical breacher" version. You can switch out your existing mag tube for a longer one from Mossberg, but then you are limited to only the 20" barrel due to the way the barrels connect to the mag tubes.

I don't think you can use model 500 barrels on a 535...

You are probably correct. I just checked the web site and saw that the 535's are chambered for 3-1/2" shells. It looked like the barrel to mag tube mount was the same as with the 500's.........

mic214

Thanks for the info.

Maybe I'll pick up an 870 at some point to play with and make my "fun gun" for target shooting, and for keeping here at home. It won't be a hunting gun. I'll keep my Mossberg for that.

chucksmooth,

I got mine directly from Mossberg. They run $20.00 + $6.95 for shipping. You have to measure your forend tube to get the right size. Apparently Mossberg had two different lengths for their forends. Mine was 6-3/4" and I think the other length was 7-1/4" or something like that. The part number for mine was #12363.

Mick

PS:

They don't come embroidered with the Mossberg name & logo like you see on their "Breacher" model....just plain black....

And you can also get just the strap and the screws for around $5.00 + shipping, but I don't have the part number for that.....

rantingredneck The 835 Choate +2 ext tube will extend past the barrel about 1 1/2" on a 835 with a 18.5" barrel. Choate says on their site that a +2 tube is for a 18.5" barrel 835 but that is wrong. The +2 tube they sale is for a 20" barrel and the +3 they sale is for a 22" or 24" barrel shotgun. The +3 will be about 1.5" to short on a 24" 835 shotgun. Why Choate posted the wrong info on their site I have no idea. I am able say this from experience.

mic214 needed a custom tube for his shotgun that was 4.25" long and it only cost him $20 more including shipping. Not a bad deal. He is the only one I know of who has a 835 with a 18.5" barrel and a +2 extension that is even with the muzzle.

I was thinking about getting ghost ring sights, but the only cost effective option I could find is to get a heat shield with them built in. Is that a practical solution?

The best all around option would be to buy a set of Mossberg GRS and have a gunsmith braze or solder the front sight on. A smith should not charge much for that job. You will probably have to refinish the barrel which is easy and cheap to do. The heat shield GRS option is not an option in my opinion.

i've just picked up a maverick 91 with a 22" 835 rifled deer barrel. i put my collapsible stock off my 500 on it (the 500 is going back to wood), and am thinking of the choate mag extension. will the +3 fit ok? this will be my duty shotgun, so the more the merrier.

also, noone else makes a mag extension for the 835/91? the offerings for remington/winchester won't fit? all the threads look the same.

thanks ahead of time..and yes, i know the thread is old. but since it asks the right question, lol.....
