Magnum rifle Stereotypes

I gave up careing what other people thought many years ago .I like magnums for elk and don't give a hoot what anyone else hunts with . I shoot what I like . Some folks are recoil shy so magnums are not for them , thats their problem.

For Centerfire Rifles I prefer the Middle .30 Cartridges like .308 Winchester, and 30 06 But I have alwayse kind of wanted a CZ Mauser in .375 H&H
If I ever get a chance to go on an African Safari I will get one.

Wish ya'll would quit talkin' bout me! I love my cannons.

Reasons to justify:

1. They are loud and obnoxious at the rifle range (like me)
2. They rip apart anything you hit (less cleaning)
3. Flatter trajectory (better for Kentucky windage)
4. They improve your physique (toting 10lbs vs 6lbs)
5. They improve your marksmanship (cant afford to waste the ammo at that price)
6. They increase your tollerence to pain
7. Last but definately not least..........mine's bigger than you'rn.

In reality, gentlemen, I do love my magnums and will continue to do so. To each their own. ;)

Magnums are wimpy guns people need to hunt deer with a 50 BMG lol. Always loved it when I see people post "Can I hunt Deer with a 50 BMG"

I agree with the guy above me. To each his own.

A 300 Win Mag is the absolute bare minimum that will kill any Alabama whitetail. If you don't believe that, just ask ANY gun counter guru and they will set you straight.

A few years back I consolidated cartridges, and the couple of magnums that I did have didn't make the cut. There is no time in my foreseeable future that I will hunt anything requiring a magnum, though I I do often kick around the idea of a precision rifle in a .300 of some sort. For now I just enjoy seeing all of the 'brand new hunters' that show up at our Sheriff sponsored rifle sight in days at our range. They usually come straight from (insert any) gun shop with a new .300. Then they promptly leave with a crimson ring around their eye. It just never gets old...

I'll stick with my .308 and '06.

I don't worry about what others think about my choices. I buy the guns I want.

For deer hunting, I stick to ~.30 cal non-magnums as they are more than enough. But I've always wanted a premium quality bolt gun in .375 H&H, for no good reason since I don't go on safaris, but I'll probably get one eventually anyway. At the very least, I'll enjoy shooting it in the great outdoors from time to time and having it as a work of art. Or maybe it will inspire me to start going on safaris? No matter, since I'll be the one paying for it, no one else need worry.

I have a 300 Weatherby...I've squeezed the trigger 4 times since I've owned it and 1 first time broke my nose and gave me a black eye lol...it was the first magnum round I've ever fired and really wasn't expecting the recoil. I can hit MOA groups at 200 yards with my AR15 and MOA at 300 with my remington 700 in 243 but that weatherby is a beast... I only bought it for elk...not because I needed a magnum round but because my brother was selling it and I wanted something larger than 243 for elk and bear. now I have something that will also take grizzlies, moose and buffalo should I ever choose to hunt for them. I know a guy that claims a 300 win mag is the greatest gun ever made for hunting deer. I've seen more deer killed with 22lr and 223 than any magnum round...a magnum round is just harder to control...perhaps those guys shoot lighter rounds to compensate for a lack of marksmanship lol.

For years my main go to round for deer was 30.06. I bought a Model 70 300 WIN. MAG. just in case I ever went on a big hunt and needed a little more punch. I killed one whitetail deer with it and it has been a safe queen since. About 2 years ago I finally bought a 7 MAG. after putting it off for years and years. I like that caliber for deer, but it really doesn't kill them any deadier than the 30.06 in my book. It does offer just a little more oomph and it is not bad as far as recoil. I will probably use it a few years and just go back to the 30.06 or maybe buy a .260 or 6.5 Creedmoor. I realize you don't have to have a big caliber gun for whitetails, but if I choose to use one this deer season it is my choice. If someone else wants to use a large caliber then that is fine. I hear them all the time at a distance, some sound almost like a cannon went off and I wonder man why do those guys want to use such a loud large caliber rifle. Same reason as why we drive different trucks, it is a free country and because we can. :)

I just realized that I indeed do own a magnum. It's one of the quietest and most pleasant to shoot rifles I own. A Marlin lever gun in .357 MAGNUM.

Keep the comments coming... Oh well... My father just told me I'm a wussy for not owning a .340 Weatherby... Might as well upstage him and get a 338-378...

Well just go ahead and get the 460 Weatherby Magnum. :)

If recoil bothered me and I couldn't shoot tight groups due to flinching I wouldn't shoot a .300 Win Mag. But I can shoot cloverleaf groups with mine and I only regret it when I have to shoot more then a couple to verify zero at the range each year. I put a new scope on this year and had to fire almost box through it to get it on (after the scope mounts had loosened up from recoil). My shoulder is sore. But if you're hunting with it it's only one shot and you don't feel the recoil. And I can put it dead on out to 300 yards without compensating. THAT is the true advantage of a magnum IMHO.

Some folks just can't handel the power ,of a magnum. Great ,I get to buy once fired magnums at bargin prices . there is an upside to everything if you look . Do folks that can't handel magnums drink Bud Lite, drive a Prius, and stay in the shallow end of the pool ?

theres a post going on right now on a another fourm where guys are complaining about the recoil of 25-06s. I had to chuckle as my 11 and 13 year old grandsons hunt with them and shoot them all the time and ive never heard them complain once about recoil. The 13 year old was at the range with me the other day and i was shooting one of my 7mags with 140s at about 3100 fps and he wanted to try it. After 3 shots he said, Grandpa this thing is louder then my gun! He didnt say a thing about the recoil. Even a 7 mag will not hurt you if your holding it right. Same goes for big bore handguns some people run and hide from a 357 and some have no problem with a 475. Neither really hurts you. You just got to get over the muzzle blast and the jump of the gun and tell yourself things are happening but im really not experiencing pain. But then i dont drive a prius or drink capachino. I drive a chev truck and drink black coffee.

by "dead on" you mean plus or minus 6 inches right? Cause if you mean that then you beat the old 30-30 by a good 40 yards.

When you look at the ballistics magnums aren't as impressive as their name sounds, no matter how much they are marketed.

Doesn't stop the 300 Win Mag for being a much better elk round than the 30-30.

While I'm not a fan of magnums, the 300 win mag is very flat shooting. A 150gr bullet can be sighted 3" high at 150-ish and be just 3" low at 325-ish. Step up to a 180, and you only lose about 20 yards from both numbers.

The 30-30, at +/- 3" is only at 225-ish.

I'll stay with my 140gr 7-08, 3" high at 140, 3" low around 280-290. The extra 40 yards isn't worth the recoil to me. If I needed the energy, maybe, but I don't and probably never will.

My friend had a 300 WM. I shot it and did ok with it. I hated the muzzle blast and recoil though. I can make shots faster and with more confidence with an /06 or a 308 Win too. I've shot two deer and both were less than 100 yds away. For what do I need a Magnum for in the Rocky Mountains? Why would I need to beat myself up when I know darn well that my 308 or 45/70 will be just fine?

One deer I shot dropped right there and the other ran about 20 or 30 yds. Both one shot. Though I have not studied the ballistics of the magnums, I suspect that my 45/70 Elk load has all the energy of the mags (30 cal at least) and none of the obnoxiousness that are present in the mag chamberings.

Perceived recoil is a individual phenomenon. Some "Magnums" recoil differently than others. My 44 Mag is much more pleasant to shoot than any hot 357 load because there is no sharp crack, but rather a dull boom. My 45/70 in max loadings is more pleasant to shoot for me than a 300 WM for the same reason.

It has to be an ego thing I think, about the magnum rifles. Whether its look how big is my gun, or look how far I can shoot. Personally, it would feed my ego more if I downed a big critter with less gun. I can understand critter control though and the need for increased distance because critter control is not hunting par se. So I think the mags have their place, but are being sold in higher numbers than their specialized use alone would require.
