Mag-Na-Port

I own four...

...revolvers that have been Magnaported:
  • Ruger Superblackhawk, SS, 7.5" barrel
  • S&W Model 29-5, blued, 5" barrel
  • S&W Model 29-2, nickel, 4" barrel
  • S&W Model 19-3, blue, 4" barrel
I didn't have any of the work done. The revolvers were all done by the prior owners.

The one which shows the best results is the Ruger. The 7.5" barrel is long enough for the process to be effective. The muzzle flip is less than a non-ported barrel. Muzzle flash is really bright - so much for night vision.

The S&W Model 29-5 has marginal effect at best. I don't use lead bullets in it since it shaves the bullet, and leaves deposits around the ports.

The Models 29-2 and 19-3 must have been ported on someone's recommendations. It has no effect, other than increasing muzzle flash.

I compared the Model 19-3 that was Magnaported, to another Model 19-3 that was not Magnaported. I really couldn't tell much with the .357 Magnum.

I used to own a Thompson-Center Contender with a Super 14 barrel, in .44 Magnum. I had the barrel Magnaported because the recoil was quite heavy, and I thought it might help. That it reduced muzzle flip, and some recoil, was true. However, it just wasn't worth having it done. The Contender probably would be better if the grip configuration were different.

My 329PD (currently for sale in the classifieds btw) done by Mag-Na-Port

Porting. Most love it or hate it. Me ? Ya I loved the muzzle brake on my 50 BMG, but hated it on my 454. I had the ports cut off and now happier.

Will I ever buy another porter gun ?? Heell NO ;)

Hlips....are you by chance selling because it's ported

I'm only selling it because I got hit with some significant medical bills and hate the thought of accruing any debt after working so hard to be rid of debt.

I use to hold an FFL for several years although many moons ago. My department issued S&W model 67's and it seemed like every academy the new troops wanted their own copy of the department gun. For their personal gun, porting was an OK thing to do since department guns could not be altered in any way. I've sent so many guns to Mag-Na-Port for others and myself, I've lost count. After the first 10 guns they gave me a 1/3rd off deal on all subsequent guns I sent them.

In my experience I've found that their porting always helps keeping the barrel down and with recoil and now they're offering many more options that they never did before. When I first started with them they only had single porting for handguns, but now you can get quad porting, dual porting, and rifle porting on your handgun. I wanted them to put their Mag-Na-Port logo on a couple of guns early on and they refused saying that it would confuse and detract from their custom gun business, but now you can get the logo as well.

Currently they are working on three of my guns, all stainless Ruger's. An Alaskan is getting ported and logo-ed, A Super Blackhawk is getting rifle ported and logo-ed, and my 9 1/2" Super Redhawk is getting Mag-Na-Braked and logo-ed. I wouldn't say that you'll get your money back, but it does increase the value of your firearm (unless you decided to port an original early production Colt SAA).

In the end, They do great work and if you chose the right porting for your situation/barrel length etc. you should be very pleased with the outcome. Smithy.
