M1 Gerand or Mossin Negant

"Moosen"?? I think someone's been watching Brian Regan too much....

I have the M1 Garand, would like to get both the 03' Springfield and a Mosin-Nagant one day. I have a friend who I let borrow the M1 and after he shot it some his comment was "That M1 Garand is just plain scary!" because it was so accurate. He was making hits on the steel at 200 yards, and he's into the 50s age wise with degraded eyesight (like many of us older folks...)

As the others have stated two entirely different classes of rifles.

Do a bit of reading on the history of WW2 and learn about how the "Garand" won WW2 for the allies. Once you've reached the point where you can appreciate its history, you'll want one.

Mosin's are pretty much junk bolt guns in comparison and sell for around $100. Don't take offense Mosin shooters and yes, it played a role in WW2 as well. I too will eventually buy a Mosin for its historical significance in the East.

I'll toss my .02 in to this, just for emphasis:

Garand.

Get it yesterday, you'll never look back. Just make sure you get it inspected before shooting it. CMP inspects their weapons, but still. Also, get good enbloc clips for it, but buy a lot. At the end of the day, they're all stamped metal and some function better than others, just luck of the draw.

There's another thread running which discusses ammo selection for the Garand.

http://thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=473464

This is a very serious topic, as the Garand (like other gas-operated rifles) was designed for a certain type of ammo. Significant changes in powder type, available bullet weights and primer sensitivity have occurred in commercial ammo since then, which means it may damage the rifle (or you) if you use the wrong stuff.

Reloading introduces additional variables to control, such as proper cartridge headspace.

This shouldn't be taken as discouragement, but rather "full disclosure".

The Garand is a terrific rifle.

Get the M1 Garand and ask for the Mosin for Christmas next year. It's cheap enough that a family member should be willing to buy you one.

If someone is in front of you and says these two rifles are free and you can only have one for the rest of your life grab the Garand and never look back.

Baba L...

ok ok.

for the love of all that is good man, it's spelled G A R A N D, not an "e" anywhere in the name at all.

fixed! lol

Anyway,
I'm sending in my paperwork to the CMP right now. It is either a new 1911 or the Garand. Or increase my budget and get both. I guess WWII era weapons are on my mind.

I can always get an AR-15 and will do so at some point.

My Mosin was not expensive, but I would not want to be on the other end of that bad boy. I had my cousins fiance out shooting it last summer and if you could see the look on his face when he first shot it. Now he goes shooting every time he is in town.

Now I can't wait to see the look on my face after getting the Garand.

bittt
Excellent! You will love your M1 from the CMP I'm sure and certain. Make sure to order some of the M2 .30-06 ammo they have as well. They're just about out of the Greek surplus so get some if you can. Their Hornaday is excellent and designed for the Garand system as well. It costs more than the Greek, but hey, ya gotta do whatcha gotta do if ya wanna shoot.

As to 1911s... IMO, you need (or want) one of those as well. Surplus will cost ya... but that's a whole new thread to open elsewhere in the forum.

The MN is also an excellent rifle considering it is what it is. Look up the famous Finn sniper Simo Hayha to see what he and that rifle (similar at least) did during their little conflict. Probably the man, not the tool used.

I've always wondered where we'd be today if the US went with Garand's original decision to use the Pederson .276 round in lieu of the .30-06. For about 30 seconds. Waxed ammo? MacArthur made that decision for us so it's a moot point at best.

See your face when you get it? Wait until you hear that first "ping". Brings a smile to my face thinking about it. I remember my sons first time shooting his Grandpas M1. Big smile after that ping. Every time. On everyones face (Grandpa, moi and my son)

Keep us posted, eh?
