M&P 22 Compact vs. Ruger SR22

I'm slowly narrowing down the choice of trainer handgun for my small handed wife. Today we went to the local Dunhams store which has the M&P on sale for $349 and the Ruger for $379.

The guy handed her the M&P and she said this doesn't feel bad.

Then the Ruger and she said this is ok.

She's very short for words but when I asked if they would take off the trigger lock the guy behind the counter said "I wish". This is the second time I ran into this now that they have started selling handguns.

So besides driving to another store to fondle them does any one own one and what do they like or don't like. How well do they like ammo, are they easy to use. Have you broke either and how was the warranty process.

Fit is most important

Take your wife to a Gun Show.
They will have a whole lot more to choose from.
I prefer something that is close to what she might be convinced to carry as a personal defense firearm. That usually means handling number of firearms far beyond two.
Then ask her "which one did you like the most?" and go with that decision. It is for her so give her all the possible models available.

Good luck and good shooting.

I just bought the M&P 22 Compact and so far love it. I tried the Ruger SR22 but it was too cramped for my hand while the M&P 22 compact fit very nice, other than reach to the trigger being a bit short for me, and I wear XL gloves.

I wanted to get the Walther PPQ 22 but it was too large for my wife and daughter while the M&P 22 Compact fits both of them great and though they have not shot it yet so far they love it including the looks. Both are new to shooting and I wanted a .22 to start them off. If they do well with it the M&P Shield should be a natural progression for them.

I took my new M&P .22 to the range a few days ago after cleaning and lubing it first and it was perfect for the 120 rounds I shot through it. I shot 20 rounds CCI Mini Mag HP, 20 rounds Remington Golden Bullets, 20 rounds American Eagle HP, and 60 rounds from Federal Champion Bulk Pack 525.

Even though it was a bit cramped for trigger reach I was shooting right on target with it and it is a hoot and easy to rapid fire. When I got home it was barely dirty when I took it down to clean and lube it. It is a snap to field strip and takes all of 5 seconds or so.

The Ruger SR22 has a great reputation so IMHO it may come down to personal preference and what works best for one.

Here is my M&P 22 Compact in my had. The grip length is about the same as the M&P Shield with the 7 round magazine.

I bought a ruger sr22 a couple years ago. Its a good gun. My wife and two sons all love to shoot it. It is a little picky on ammo once in a while, but I have heard that about most of the compareable .22 handguns. Good luck with your purchase and God bless.

I like your suggestion but taking her to a gunshow would be me cashing in a lot of favors.

I guess you could say if it flops it's mine so I have to use it. But I don't want it to flop. I do hope I get to shoot it. We already hit up a gander mountain with a lot but they didn't have the M&P. She did like some Ruger 9mm's there.

Earlier I had a thread titled something like 22LR for ccw. And a lot of great ideas came from it. The one criteria I have is I want something american made.

I had an SR22 a few years back, it was nice, and having shot a family members M&P22 I think I'd pick the Ruger I can't remember but I think it was a little smaller? But I'd still take the Browning 1911-22 over those two any day.

For what it might be worth:

I bought an SR22 maybe two years ago. Sort of a lark; my expectations weren't all that high, given the negative reports on modern small .22 pistols like the Mosquito. I figured that even if was picky, I could use it for students and, at less than $300, I wasn't putting all that much at risk.

Two years and somewhere between one and two thousand rounds later, the SR22 has performed flawlessly. It eats every brand of ammo it has been fed; it is surprising accurate; it has reasonably good sights; and so far everyone who has fired it has loved it. In particular, no one has complained about the fit in their hand.

In my opinion the size of the M&P Compact and the feel of it's grip are its greatest attributes. My pistol has digested a pile of thirty year old ammo of all makes and except for an occasional dud cartridge it has not had a problem feeding and firing. Accuracy is more than acceptable for a plinker and you do not know you are even packing it. I have shot many many .22 pistols and have found the Smith to be among the few chosen as a favorite.

Tell them that part of the condition for the sale is for you to try the trigger.

They may be more willing then.

Academy Sports uses gun locks as well, but they will remove the lock for a serious buyer. So this store may be more willing to allow you to try the trigger if you are serious about purchasing. You don't have to buy if you don't like the triggers, but if you are sold on something but need to know how the trigger feels, then...

If they still do not let you try the trigger... then don't buy from there. And when you finally do get the pistol... you make sure to tell them you bought elsewhere, and that refusing to allow you to try the trigger to make up your final decision was the reason you went elsewhere.

Maybe they will gt the hint and change their policy.

But my fiance likes her SR22, but she doesn't use it much in DA mode, but I have found the DA to be decent. The SA is good, but not great.

I emailed their customer support to see if they were following correct procedure.

marine6680,
I read a review online about the DA and they said that
The DA pull felt more like a revolver’s than a pistol’s. After five DA shots, I could almost hear my ligaments popping like overstretched violin strings and started looking around for a major dose of Motrin.

Is it really that bad or is this guy just using it as an excuse to practice his writing. I imagine SA would be the main use.

Here's the article.

I'm all for reading reviews but i'm not stopping on the first one.

Horrible. Watched the reviews on both by
Hickok45, IraqVeteran8888, NutnFancy, 22plinkster and Sootch. Also several others and they all like both.

She's a lefty so the left ability of the SR22 seems to be winning. I do like the hammer and decock. Really want to add another S&W to the safe.

Found a local gander mountain that had an SR22 and it was probably the worse thing I could do. Played with the decocker, hammer and mag release left and right and now i'm favoring it. The real question is do I go buy one today or tomorrow. The small grip is very small in my hands and it's going to be great for Melody.

Her Birthday is friday. Granted I already got her a big present this could be a second.

Do you ever run into it being picky with ammo. I have a bunch of thunderbolts and golden bullets squirreled away.

I read a few reviews where people complained about feeding/ejecting issues and after they got beyond being stubborn and sent it back to rugger a flawless gun game back.

Oh by the way I bought it from the place that wouldn't take the lock off. Even after filling out the paperwork they still didn't take the lock off even with instant approval from the DOJ.

I sure hope they remove the lock before I pick it up. I'll have to ask their other gun guy why the crazy lock procedure now.

Mine has fed every kind of ammo.

I did have some trouble with some Blazer ammo... unplated lead. It would lead up the rifling and start keyholing after only a few mags.

Could have been an ammo issue, as I had no trouble with plated rounds, and others claimed no issues with Blazer.

Trying a trigger is an essential part of the buying process... You can end up with way too many unhappy customers otherwise.

My SR-22 shoots everything I have,,,

My SR-22 shoots everything I have,,,
Rem Golden Bullet, Federal Bulk, Old Remington Mil-Surp, literally everything.

Played with the decocker, hammer and mag release left and right and now i'm favoring it. The real question is do I go buy one today or tomorrow.

I was thinking that was what would happen,,,
The M&P Compact is a very nice pistol,,,
But I like to be able to de-cock a gun.

I predict that you will be very happy with the SR-22.

My SR22 has never had a misfire with plated ammo: golden bullets, fiocci, mini mags, etc. On the other hand, it won't even consider cycling Federal Automatch or Federal bulk. And I'm totally cool with that...she's a fantastic performer as long as I feed her what she likes.

I'm impressed with the Ruger SR22,mine feeds anything so far....hi-vel & target velocity ammo.Ruger has improved the sights as well, the elevation detents are distinct & no side to side wobble (slop.?)..

...I shot some crazy small groups with 20 yo Chinese subsonic ammo @15 yards. :D
