M&P 15-22 questions.

tINY - In a way i agree with you,but 1x red dots have a max distance of 75' let alone 100 yards with my eyes.
One issue is the MOA,and this is as i understand it.The higher the MOA the larger the dot,and at 75' that covers a 3" circle for me.Thats on a 5 MOA red dot ive been using.
So maybe a 2 MOA dotted 1x scope would make things alot better.

I wont be using it past 100 yards either, most 50' too 100' mostly.

I have some Super Colibri 20gr no powder rounds i hope to get rid of some squirrels that keep getting fat eating my spring garden tomato seedlings wich i loose so many of each year.
In my pistol they were just a tad louder than an air rifle, but with a long barreled gun like this i hope it will be almost silent.I still gotta check with local police as im out of town, but still have neighbors.
If that don't work out as i cant risk loosing my ccw license over squirrels ill just buy a dang Good pellet gun.And yes i would eat them if its legal and safe.

Lots of soldiers using aimpoints in combat will argue that one.

I think a non-magnifying sight is a good idea on the 15-22 (it's not more than a 100 yard gun at best). But simple dots aren't really that good except for stationary targets. Look at circle-dot and cross-hair patterns.

They are still better than irons and can be used in low light (and with NVD). The Holosight gets good reviews...

9x19- A question on your optics,i see one is just a 1x red dot, whats the other scope?
Im a complete noob to scopes so i dont know what numbers and specs mean, but with that scope on whats the closest you can shoot and still have a good sight picture?
Are the 1x red dots just better for faster target acquisition?

DasFriek,

The scope is a Simmons 2.5x-8x and works great for longer shots (25 yards and out). For anything close in, out to 50 yards I like the red-dot or reticle sights. In fact I just installed a BSA PMR (Panoramic Multi-Reticle) sight on one of my 15-22s. It co-witnesses with the iron sights perfectly and offers 4 different aiming reticles. It was on sale and I think it's perfect for the 15-22.

Smith & Wesson M&P 15-22 "Performance Center"

Mine is beautiful! Directions say the chamber is more critical, and have fewer choices of reliable ammunition, but, for that, I receive more accuracy.
It is a dead on gun, and really works well with most bulk high velocity ammunition. Owner's manual gives you specific brands that have been proven to work well, and those that have not.

Yeah, but that is an apples and oranges type of thing. A lot of the simple red dots are used for CQC. Urban combat, moving targets, house clearing. Street to street. It is useful at distance but again, it is a heck of a lot different to put a 2 MOA dot on a man's chest at 200 yards than it is to try to take a head shot on a squirrel at 60 yards with that same dot. Size of target is a problem!

@klmspider - welcome to the forum and congrats on your new rifle.

Mine has been outstanding. I feed it mostly CCI Standard Velocity and Federal Auto Match. 100% function with those. I also once in a while have the CCI AR 22 (99%). I don't use the Remington as they seem dirtier and have more duds. Winchesters have a lot of issues with cycling. I think it's due to underpowered loads, it will fire and eject but fail to chamber the next round. I have not tried the Federal bulk or CCI bulk yet. Might just pick some up today. If the weather cooperates, may go shoot later today.

Hope your rifle functions 100% and have fun and safe shooting.

I bought a M&P15-22 a little over a year ago and the number of malfunctions I've experienced with it can be counted on one hand. It's probably the best 450 dollars I spent and run mostly Federal bulk ammo through it. It's definitely a fun little plinker and training tool for the AR-15 platform.

Overall I think its a good gun for the type, and it very accurately emulates an AR action if that is of interest to you.

Accuracy is some and some which I find odd, as its basically free floating (and I tried some good quality match grade 22 ammo in it).

I bought a Leopold 2-7 Rimfire scope to use on it and the result were 2 inch's or more at 50 yards.

As stated, you have to carefully load the magazine so its staggered, once you figure that out and get the muscle memory to work it goes well.

Mind had multiple issue with FTF and FTE and I sent it in as it got worse and worse and came back flawlessly functioning with any ammo I put through it.

Red Dot sight is ok for hitting things, but not if you want accuracy (the Leopold scope is good for that, its gone on to serve on an AR so its plenty capable and Leupold said it was fine).

Frankly I really liked the gun, but I wanted to use it as an accuracy trainer and with the groups I could not tell if I was doing anything or not to improve.)

Trigger is typical poor AR trigger, I replaced with with an RRA two state, get the chrome one if you really want a good trigger. That adds $100, but its a very very good trigger at a decent price (a lot less than the Timny and Geisele and almost as good)

I sold it as it did not do what I wanted. Some get real tack drivers, most are so so accuracy wise and some are pretty bad. for what you pay for it, and for who makes their barrels, I would expect a consistent tack driver.

I think it’s the best of its type out there, fun plinking gun but certainly not a fine shooting gun if you want to target shoot for results.

Mine has been pretty accurate. I have not measured groups when using a scope, but here is a target at 50 yards using iron sights.

I have a BSA Stealth on it right now cowitnessed with Magpul MBUS front and rear. I'm thinking of putting a 3-9x40 Burris Rimfire scope on it just to check how small the group can get. It will probably have my Vortex Strikefire on it before summer time.

S&W

Trade the layaway for a SCAR or different model. THe Colt's and the S&W are plagued by many problems. The Beretta Scar seams to be very nice and has a good rep.

I just bought the H&K/Umarex MP5 and would recommend it to anyone!

Bought my 15/22 last summer.

Between me, relatives and friends, I bet it's had 10,000 rounds run through it. We take it to the deer lease and plink away a couple 500 round bulk packs without blinking.

I have 10 mags and I write my name in the target at 15 yards. I can clobber clay pigeons at 50 yards ... open sights only.

Only mod is a UTG grab handle.

FTF/FTE issues occur, but nothing that is irritating. Proper mag loading is critical.

I've had the best luck with Federal copper coated. And the worst luck with Winchester and Thunderbolt.
