M&P 15-22 questions.

I just put one in layaway since im poor and need extra time to save but still get a great sale price of $419 after selling my S&W .22a pistol.

I cant really find much about this gun on the net or here with the search function. So whats the overall consensus?
I will NOT buy Remington .22 ammo as ive read it does cause issues in this gun,i wouldn't buy it anyway since the bullet wobbles on the case like a bobble head doll.

I did read of some early extractor or ejector issues and Smith will take it back fix it quik and send a fee free mags for the trouble.
I like my guns as stock as possible to keep reliability high and wasting money on stuff that looks kool but is useless.

Mods:
I know i want a red dot sight, most likely a 2x will be all i need,my range i want to shoot is 50'-100 yards.I had a cheap 1x 30mm Tasco on my old .22a and at 50' i could do 2" groups,so i would like to maybe just double the distance and that would be fine.
I know Tasco makes an affordable 2x red dot thats not overly large.
I have Opticplanet.com bookmarked so any other suggestions are welcome,$150 max price pls.
Also a small forearm pistol grip with a built in bipod.

I really enjoyed my .22a but it was a tad on the boring side, and i do miss it.But i had no need for 2 .22's and money wise i can only afford 1.

About red dots,MOA refers to the size of the dot thats shown? Most are 5 MOA so would one about 1-3 MOA be better?

I own one of these rifles. I have done a couple of youtube videos on my gun. The ejector/extractor issues are not limited to the early models. I have one of the latest serial numbers and my gun experienced these problems.

The main problem I experienced with mine was a FTE. The gun would not fire even 2 rounds without jamming due to a FTE. The good news is you can send your gun back to S&W and they will fix it for free or you can take a pair of needle nose pliers and spend about 60 seconds and fix the gun yourself. The problem is S&W is shipping several of the guns with the ejector not lined up properly. If you bend it to the right position it will fire flawlessly. Since I fixed mine I have put over 500 rounds through the gun without a single FTE.

The other problem the gun experiences is the FTF's. This is contributed to the magazine design. It is very important you load the magazine correctly or you will experience this problem. Even taking my time to load the mag I still have about a 1% FTF rate which I am still working on.

Overall I love the gun. I think it is the best tactical .22 rifle out there. I would not trade or sell it. It just needs a little work.

That is a video of my fix. I do not claim to be a professional video producer so please bear with me on this amateur video. Also if you choose to do any gunsmithing on your own gun do so at your own risk.

I also have a video on my youtube page you can watch of me shooting the gun after I fixed it and you can see it ejects every round.

Thanks for the link,im a fix it myself guy instead of sending it in when ever thats possible.
I expect a failure once in a while with any .22,mostly since i shoot ONLY bulk ammo except some really hyper velocity 1700fps stuff just for fun.

Im finding the 2x red dots few and far between,is something made similar but marked under normal rifle scopes specs that has a red dot?
I guess im saying id like a comparable 2x red dot but in a rifle scope that has the dot but marketed as a rifle scope and not a sight.

Just got back in from shooting one of these about one hour ago. It's freezing outside but the kids and I shot for about 45 minutes. Anyway, one of my boys got one for Christmas and we've shot about 400 rounds through it so far. Not one problem yet. Truly fun rifle.

I recommend having several mags though, we were spending too much time loading in the freezing weather. And handling that small ammo isn't fun in the cold.

Enjoy yours.

mines running a 100 percent with blazer but to be honest its the only ammo ive tried. Ive got a couple cases of it and havent found any other cheap bulk 22 ammo around hear in a while. I have put two bricks of blazer through it though and it hasnt missed a beat.

I recommend this as well. The mags are cheap (under $20), however they are on backorder just about everywhere right now. I ordered extras myself about 10 days ago directly from S&W and have not received them yet, i did receive a postcard saying it would be a few weeks.

Ill be hitting up my local shops and pray they have a few in stock, they normally carry alot of extra mags for most guns.
Im getting pretty excited to get mine out of layaway, just picked up my 500SPX and haven't shot it yet so i have alot of shooting to do soon.
Plus i have about 2k rounds of various .22 ammo all high velocity and not Remington either.
Tmblweed- Once my Internet starts acting right ill check those links out good, luckily this is a .22 with no recoil so i dont need a super strong scope due to recoil.

s w 22

the thing is over priced and and a **** of a firearm. you are much better off getting a 22 lr upper for an ar 15 and then you can switch your uppers. a good 22lr upper will run you around $500 and a built lower around $200 so for about $100 more you can get alot more for your $$$$$$$

But Ranger Dave.... Most people are paying about $380 for the 15-22...

So, I got one for almost $200 less than a decent 22lr upper. It really is a nice set-up.

ar

i havent seen them for less then $650 . but $400 is still alot for something you have to fix out of the box. ill stick to my 10/22

You have a 10-22 that you have less than $400 into and it shoots well enough for you?

More power to you...

My 15-22 worked great out of the box, but I did take it apart to thread the barrel after dumping a few magfulls of mixed ammo.

ar

i like the idea of a 22lr ar i love my upper i have shooting buddies who have had the smith and the colt . and both have had a ton of problems with them . i just think the upper an an ar is the way to go. cant count the rounds i have put down range. with the xmas break and the kids home all day we have went through 6000 in the past week. with the ar and the 10/22 doing most of the work

I will have to say that 'dave's experiences are far from typical with the S&W 15-22.

I have two and neither one has given me any trouble... there are lots of owners over at RFC who've had no issues.

I think they are a great buy in the rimfire market... selling at a price that Spikes and TacSol can't, or won't go near!

Seems like a slightly modified 15-22 upper could fit on an AR-15 lower. I bet it could sell for $300. But, there isn't much to the lower. So, I don't expect that we'll see them for sale.

I would but i think AR 15's suck, but i don't care if my fine working .22 looks like one.Ill just make sure i tell people its a .22 and not a worthless .223 caliber.

Sereously.....sheesh!

Now to address the helpfull comments that i do appreciate :)
Price wise its normally $500 everywhere,on sale its $429 now locally. And those mags you linked will be a nice addition once i get the rifle out and can afford more mags.
I swear money just turns to water and runs out of my pockets like i have a bladder problem. But im slowly getting a nice collection going.
5 ccw handguns,1 shotgun and then this .22 rifle on the way.I sold my .22 pistol to fund this purchase.

9x19- A question on your optics,i see one is just a 1x red dot, whats the other scope?
Im a complete noob to scopes so i dont know what numbers and specs mean, but with that scope on whats the closest you can shoot and still have a good sight picture?
Are the 1x red dots just better for faster target acquisition?

I think a non-magnifying sight is a good idea on the 15-22 (it's not more than a 100 yard gun at best). But simple dots aren't really that good except for stationary targets. Look at circle-dot and cross-hair patterns.
