Victor: Can't offer too much guidance on selection of M-1 Carbine, except to recommend against any Universal, Plainfield or Iver Johnson civvie. The two GI M-1's that I owned were made by Winchester (early, and the equal of any commercial-quality rifle of the time) and a Rockola/Quality Hardware mismating, probably a lunchbox special which nonetheless shot reliably and accurately. If I had to buy an M1 today, I wouldn't know where to turn except Fulton. Miltech also has a refurbish program for GI guns, but I've seen parts fly off a Miltech Garand when it was fired on national TV, and that gives me cause for pessimism about their quality control. Back in the late 60's when DCM carbines were common, Gun World magazine had an article on 'smithing and loading and customizing them in almost every issue. slabsides
