loudest rifle

Agree most of the 50 BMG's with a brake are up there.
The AK 's are pretty loud for a very common 'smaller' caliber weapon.

If you want to include any rifle then try standing near an Anzio 20mm. Double ear protection plus hands over the top is advised.

Magnaported 7mm Weatherby is pretty loud. My unported 7mmSTW has caused a few people to stop what they were doing a time or to also.

loud mo fo

I was at the range one day and a guy set up next to me with a .300 Wby. Mag with break. When he fired his 1st shot 3 car alarms went off in the parking lot behind us, no kidding and I'm not exagerating. Fortunately for me he fired 8 rounds and went home. Only time I remember ever waiting for the other guy to shoot before I did. I'm fine with my lil 30-06 thank you very much!

My loudest is a .300 WM w/o a brake. It gets attention at the range but doesn't draw a crowd. Of course, it cost much less than my several pair of hearing aids over the last 10 years or so. :(

My vote would be for the 16" 50 caliber Naval rifle.

Found in groups of three on Iowa class battleships.

That's what I was about to say, when you launch a 2000 pound bullet with 600 pounds of gunpowder, that's gotta be loud.
I have heard that crewmen are not even allowed on deck when they fire these. Everyone has to be below deck and the hatches sealed.

I have 18.5" Remington carbines in .222, .243. 6mm, .308, & .350 Mag, and they seem quite a bit louder (for caliber) than rifles with longer barrels. Again, its not that they are actually louder in a measured sense, but that the blast is closer to the ear.

A .22 pistol seems louder to me than a .22 rifle, for the same reason.

It seems like more than a perception issue to me. I can tolerate a .22lr rifle with an 18" barrel without any ear protection at all. My little H&R 622 revolver with a 2.5" barrel is unbearable without ear protection. And that's holding it at arms length with the muzzle as far away from my ear as a .22 carbine's muzzle would be.

338 Lap Magnum

Member of the gun club had a custom built 338 Lapulawhatever MAGNUM built for elk season. He brought it to the rifle range several months ago to set the scope, break in, and chrono diffrent loads before elk season. I was 75 ft away at another bench, wearing glass' & hearing protection, I felt as well as heard the first round, the second, and the third. I could not believe the muzzle blast off that thing. When I found out he was going to be there the rest of the day, I left. It was louder than a Barret 50cal, I could not believe it. He said the recoil was equal to a 30-06. He must have quite the "06" as well.:D

Yes, all crew had to be below deck... not just for the noise. The muzzle blast was powerful enough that it knock a man down and roll him across the deck, or knock him into the sea. The muzzle blast was like an aerial burst artillery shell above the deck.

I can, mine has one. I can make the shooter 3 benches over miss.

last time i had mine out there was a guy about six benches down and he jumped so bad that u thought i was shooting at him,and thats with no brake.been thinking about putting one on, im a machinist so shouldnt be hard.

Well, how about the Eargesplitten Loundenboomer? Its a .22 based on a .378 Weatherby Magnum.

And yes, that is really its name. You can google it.

Oops, I missed it, but someone had already mentioned it!

Loudest rifle I have heard in person is my Mauser based 8x68S. That thing makes people on the other end of the firing line at the range flinch. I actually cleared the benches next to me last time I took it out. Downright unpleasant for everyone involved, me included.
