Lost two.A first cousin murdered.Guy caught and got the death penality.Allmost gave the victoms right advicate a heart attack.Told her to give him to me and they would never find the body. The way it is he will spend 20 yrs on death row at a big cost to the taxpayers.
The second was a second cousin.Nam did a number on him.A helocopter came over and put him over the edge.
Both very sad but a part of life I guess.

I'm old and deceitful.

I'm a christian as well. Prayer said.

The idea that suicide rates will go down if the person has no access to a gun, is probably true. Guns are the most common means of "effective" attempts with suicide. The rates would go down a small percentage if someone could hit the magic button and remove all firearms. My opinion.

However the number of suicides that would be prevented isn't even a fraction of the number of times a gun is used in self defense. Therefore the cost/benefit ratio for society is not for banning any guns. Besides, the suicidal usually leave a note of some sort which implies a thought out procedure and action. Therefore these are not quick decisions that are made because a gun is present. The suicidal will find a way. It really has much more to do with what motivates one to commit suicide, rather than if there is a gun in the house.

That being said, if you think you are or know someone who may be suicidal, the right thing to do is to remove all objects that may be used in the act. I know you can't remove a car or the bridge, but a responsible person should at least remove the guns and any dangerous chemicals. And get the person to a counseling center ASAP.

And it does little to further our common cause to fight the emotional Million mommies with emotional rants. This will quickly lead the argument to an emotional flood. Then logic has no chance of returning. As if nobody knew that.

I'm always surprised at how many people use a gun to commit suicide. That takes a lot of balls, not to mention zero respect for your body or the relatives who have to identify you. You would think something like overdose or carbon monoxide would be #1.

No disrespect to you and your present situation, thats an awful thing to have to go through.

Sorry for your loss. My cousin slit her wrists with a knife. I do not hold knives in contempt. I still have knives laying around my house, and I use them every day. My friend died in a car accident. I still drive a car. I do not hold cars in contempt. I don't blame manufacturers or lack of laws against these objects. I hope this is not innaproporiate to say at this time, but when a gun is used, somehow it is focused on as the evil object.

My condolences on your loss. My cousin committed suicide and another either committed suicide or had a fatal accidental discharge. It's a terrible thing.

My grandfather died from complications after being shot in the lung several years earlier.
(1930 medicine). My uncle and oldest friend were murdered. And a cousin. Two friends who were Class III dealers in Augusta were murdered. All but the cousin with firearms.

I still support the Second Amendment. I'd rather get rid of the thugs.

My condolence, sbryce.
It was better than some suicides that endanger others. Leaping from a building or driving head on into oncoming traffic come to mind.

Ok, BryceCanyonAD36, I gotta ask: what's the background behind your TFL handle? My husband is a 6th generation descendent of the Bryce for whom Bryce Canyon was named.

Lost one relative to firearms, that I know of anyway, and it sucked out loud because we were very close in age and were good buddies.

Casey was about 18 at the time, had just graduated from high school and married his sweetheart. They had a little boy who was about a year old. A friend of his had just gotten out of the Marine Corps. Casey was showing the guy a shotgun that he was going to clean, and the guy picked it up, assumed it was already empty, pointed it at Casey, and killed him with "an empty gun". If that guy hadn't looked like he was on the verge of committing suicide at Casey's funeral, I probably would have volunteered to "help" him get to room temperature. I honestly don't remember being more angry ever in my life than I was the day of Casey's funeral.

It was ruled an accidental shooting, though I know there is no such thing. "Accident" implies that there were circumstances beyond the control of the people involved. All that was needed was a quick look from the breech of the gun, and I'd still be able to hang out with my cousin. And I have never, ever, needed to be reminded that every gun is a loaded gun.
