Losing the sight picture?

I am hunting prairie dogs 200 to 300 yards.

I have a 17 HMR and a 17 Hornet. They both keep the sight picture so I can see the impact.

I have a .223 that I can never see the impact.

Any caliber in between those guns that will keep the sight picture?

Thanks,

A heavier .223 and lower magnification on the scope would help ....

but there are many calibers below .223 .......222 Rem, 22PPC, .221 Fireball, .204 Ruger .17Rem, off the top of my head ....doubtless there are others ..... try a used bookstore or e-bay andg et a reloading manual ....lots of good information in those things, whether you reload or not.....

I see impacts with my .223 ARs and bolts guns with no problems. The flatter you can keep the gun, the easier it is. Low mass carrier, comp, solid hold with a loaded bi-pod.

Isn't the cartridge or calibre. It's the rifle. More weight, muzzle brakes, slings(doesn't have to be an M1907) all reduce the muzzle jump.
Why do you want to see the impact?

Shooting P-dogs is a HECK of a lot of fun. Im using a 17HMR as well and the minimal recoil allows you to spot your own hits or MISSES.

That allows for a better 2nd shot, if needed. Without sounding Ghoulish, the impact of that lightly constructed bullet at high impact velocities is spectacular to say the least, as well.

What Unlicensed Dremel said. 204 Ruger in a bit heavier gun- Savage Varmint or some such thing. With 39 gr, Blitz Kings at 3700 fps shoots a good as a 22-250 with less bark and recoil.

Its quite simple, really. If you want to see the bullet strikes, you have to hold your sights on the target.

HOW you do that is where it gets complicated, depending on different factors, the cartridge being fired is NOT the biggest one, usually.

Within a given recoil class, rifle weight, scope magnification, and how YOU hold the rifle matter more.

I have a Win Model 70 varmint .22-250, topped with a 6-18x scope.
I can't recall the exact weight right now, but all up its over 12lbs.

Unsupported (just laying on the bags) at 9x the target just moves away from the crosshairs by a small amount. At 18X, the target JUMPS to the very edge of the field of view.

If you have a .223 that loses target due to recoil, I suggest using a lower magnification for the actual shot, or hold on to the rifle, differently.

"...the impact of that lightly constructed bullet at high impact velocities is spectacular to say the least, as well..." Ever see what a 220 grain Silvertip(a real one, not the current thing) out of a .30-06(M1 Rifle. Zero affect on the op rod) does to a ground hog? Bottom of its head was entirely gone. Put another into its body. The entire off side blew out.
